Who knows suspension/steering for a 66 Riviera?

I may need to replace the front suspension and or steering on my 66 Riviera.
I have some idea of what it will cost, but still have questions. Anyone know about how much I can expect if I need to replace everything?
Can a place like a Midas do it? Can I expect they can do it well?
I realise it's less complicated than modern systems, but I really am new at this.
Also, if I want to drive it in the winter, do I need to do anything drastic as far as driveability other than pray?!! How about easy stuff-it's got a 401 nailhead.

    Thanks for any help! :pp

I don't know how knowlegeable you are with front end repair, but commonly those tear up upper control arm bushings first. That's caused by weak shocks. Also, loose brake reaction rod bushings are common. Those upper bushings are a PITA to do. The brake rod (strut rod) bushings are easier to do, but be careful not to snap the threaded end off you may have to heat it to get it loose. (I broke mine off once) You will have to replace the sway bar links in order to get those out.

If your center link is loose, hold onto your wallet......those have been obsolete for the past 25 years, you could use a good '67 one as it will fit. You can also send those out to get rebuilt. They must be tight.

Lower ball joints are also common to be worn, but if it's just a little that's OK as the play in load carrying ball joints gets taken up by the load of the springs. Also, the tie rods must be tight, the outers are the most common. If your idler arm is loose, replace that too. If it's the original threaded style, a small amount of movement is acceptable.

If your Riv is anything like mine were when I got them, it's wandering all over the road. This can be expensive to have done, and Midas......well that all depends on the skill and caring of the parts installer. Personally, I'd pay a little more to have it done at place where they aren't in so much of a hurry to get things done.......those guys are on commission. I used to be a front end repair specialist, I know what goes on in those places. Go to a few places and get an estimate and a feel for the people who work there first. Remember, the "mechanic" does the work, not the salesman who may appear to be friendly. I hope I have helped you. :bglasses:

Midas, I would think twice before paying twice.

I would find a local real repair shop and have them do it even better find a front end shop this is their specialty.

    Thanks for your input guys.
The shop I brought it to says the lower ball joints and the shocks need replacement. I will get them to take a closer look at the other parts as Joe suggested.
Joe-did you just go with OEM style parts or did/were you able to upgrade suspension parts?

    Good luck to me :puzzled:

Brian, are you working on yours yet?

Duuude-so try these couple of sites:

    http://www.ClassicBuicks.com

    http://www.RockAuto.com

I just ordered a motor mount and lower ball joints from Rock Auto, they were smooth, gave me a order # etc, shipping reasonable.
Classic Buicks seemed to have any any part I wanted for the car, so it is good for reference if nothing else-but they didn't email me back, and as impressive as their site is, you can only fax them or email them.
They do seem to have everything though.

    Good luck :TU:
