Did Buick also use those composite timing gears with the nylon teeth like Olds and Pontiac? Low oil pressure was the first warning that the oil pump pickup screen was getting plugged with the nylon debris from that gear when they were going out. Those things were good for about 60k on the late 60's Olds and Pontiacs I had.

I'd suggest connecting a good manual oil pressure gauge right at the sending unit. Then if it's OK, do as John suggests or get a new one.

    So that's what I smelled.

I've had a little experience with finding expensive hard to locate parts.

That being said, in high school my '54 Ford with the 429 was equipped with a flat tappet 300 @ .006" cam with .617" gross valve lift and triple valve springs (no damper)

I ran at Milan every weekend that summer and never broke the used stock stamped steel rockers.

So, considering the experience I've had with my Ford Chevrolet and Chrysler cars as well as friends experience, I find it hard to believe a Pontiac (or other) with a reasonably close to stock cam can't run stock rockers.

Remember, roller rockers don't come out of GM boxes either. :beer

Brian they will survive on stock rockers all day long. It is only the improperly made rockers that are an issue. John's point is simple the aftermarket ones are no longer made and the final ones made break. When you find GM ones they work perfectly.

Yep, also that most times they cost as much as 427 rocker assemblies.

I recall trying to buy 426 Hemi rocker assemblies. $1200 to $1500 a set used and the ones coming out of Mopar boxes were way more.:Dou:

Our sport is fun but sometimes expensive or time consuming. But it is always rewarding.

Of course we could all run small block Chevy's and save lot's of cash. Oh wait that has not worked for Donny.:spank:

My discust over the last few years has come from people altering reality !!!

Remaking cams are one thing- creating is another.
Let alone folks that try several for best results. We finally beat it into DAves head that headers will never be allowed. And people want to BEND the rules a little at a time.
Well he can run roller rockers so I will run Flat tops and jaz my compression through the roof. Well he's going to do that so this guy turns his car into a tin can. Converter changes in the pits-more cubes-lightweight parts-porting-extrude honing-soaking tires-pusher pumps .Jesus freakin Christ!

This is just taking the fun right out of it. That's why we kicked out the FAST CLASS guys wasn't it????
All cars in this race have strong points and weakness.
My intake sucks my ex.manifolds SUCK! I deal with it!
My Torino the heads suck and it's heavy. ooh well
If pontiacs rockers suck- so be it-you picked your car NOT ME

I'm not trying to pick on one guy.I'm not trying to pick on one Brand.

I just want the rules left alone AND ENforced. Not new ones -Just enforced.

It's not that I need to chill, We all just need to go back to doing it right!
I sat in the stands at Milan dragway for the PURE STOCK DRAGS- I loved it and wanted to do it.
    I not sayin I'm a saint But I ain't a sinner either.

Donny I let you in my lab under double secret probation. Then you go and let the info out anyhow...Funny though.

Tim I am on board with you. As a tech I have been argueing along with Brian for much closer inspection of cars that seem out side the norm for years. I too hate the gutting of cars to save 35lbs. I have been requesting that we not only bore scope the motors but the trans'. I think there is more cheating going on in the trans cases than the motors anymore.

Pontiac rockers don't suck it is just the RA IV pieces are getting scarce. Our lack of cubes on RA IV's now that is another issue. Boy I could waste some time day dreaming about a 455 RA IV. It might even be able to use the "cam" Donny exposed.

Dan was going to let us inspect cars more thuroughly last year but the weather put a big old dent in the idea and everyone decided to pass on the extra tech due to that.

Hopefully this year we can do more.

I hear what Tim is saying, and I hear what Mark is saying, but...
Too much tech is what will take the fun out of it, in my opinion.
    Enforce existing rules, Yes.
Go Ape 5hit over-doing tech stuff, No thanks. Not for a race at which you win nothing.

    Keep it simple,keep it FUN:cool:

    I agree, completely.

If someone is running unusually quick for their make, model, and drivetrain, have another closer inspection of it.

I'm just there to have fun and run as quick as I can.

Less talking, more racing boys. If your motor is "Certified" than there should be no question, just certify everybody to the same standard and go racing. If you are not certifing your stuff, well I guess your in a different class...... Either way the folks come to race :3gears: not listen to a bunch of crying.:ball:

Hold the phone there real deal. Getting certified is a time consuming process. Dan & Bob only certify a limited number of cars every year. While your idea sounds great, it is unrealistic at the same time.

Come one Chris, having 160 cars torn down in the staging lanes should not take too long................:kodak:

I think the right track is to look closer at the cars that are setting the pace for their combination, whether that pace is 12.0 or 13.90

Guys take a lot of pride in what their cars run compared to cars like theirs, think the 3 or 4 Olds Pace Car HO's don't compare notes and time slips to see where Rusty :spank: is cheating ???

Tom we were only going to do additional tech on cars that seemed abnormal. Not on everyone. If you are outside the norm for a given combo you may get asked to do some additional tech. That has always been the rule but not always implemented. I got pulled back in 2000 with the Judge. We P&G'd it and I dropped an exhaust manifold and pulled the carb additionally so all could see my ports... The Judge was also pulled for making the Quick 8 at Martin. Not much of a hassle at all.

Brian I won the 1.65 rockers on EBAY. you guilted me into it even though I have two spare sets and 14 extra spares beyond the two sets.

I will keep them around in case a fellow RA IV racer needs them. With all our RA IV crying I guess I will bring them to the races for anyones emergency.
