Will this carb work on my 401ci?

Well i just bought my 66 Riviera with a hybrid engine (63' 401ci block, 66' 425 heads, 75' Rochester Quadrajet M4MC carb) about 3 weeks ago and replace water pump, brake booster and master cylinder. After doing all that i went to fire it up and it would start then die. I pumped the gas a few times and it would fire up and die again unless i hit the gas and it would run until i let off the gas.

I was looking at my carb and wrote down the number 7045184 to do some research. I found out it is a Rochester Quadrajet M4MC which was for BOP from 74-79. Will this carb work correctly with my 401ci? or should i remove it and get the right carb for the 401ci?

I have no doubt it can be made to work. The '75 Q-Jets are a transitional deal, they're the first year of the "Mod Quad" and SOME of them have some very weird power valves and other metering devices. If you're does--making it work will be somewhat more challenging. If your's doesn't...given some tuning, it will probably work BETTER than the original carb.

Shape of the throttle lever; and type of choke may be sticking points; but there are solutions to both items if there's an issue to begin with.

There is no way on Earth I'd be spending big bucks to get an original carb. If you already had one and it just needed repair...that MIGHT be a different story.

Doing more research sounds like they are a more fuel efficient than than the older models. I am new the carb world so i have alot of learning to do. Talking to a few older guys they told me to adjust the idle screw. I will see if i can find a manual for the M4MC carb and locate that screw.

Can i just spray the carb with some carb/choke cleaner to help?
