My 70 rear BUICK plate was bad and I had tried to have it repaired to no avail. So........I decided to buy a new repro from Year One. Price for the BUICK plate is $189. Seems to be a fair price for that item. So, I buy it and had them ship it. Remember this emblem is 24x2x2 I get a box 36x14x7, enough to fit 10-15 emblems in it. Hmmmm, seems to be a big waste of cardboard to make a box so big for such a small item. Oh well, no big deal. Then, look at my invoice....I did not believe this!!! :af: :af: Package Protection $2.50......for foam wrap and some crumpled paper??? Then I look at shipping $18.82 I am in Seminole FL about 20 miles west of Tampa. Y1 is in Atlanta. So, boxed item w/their new catalog weighs 6 lbs and this agrees with the UPS label on the box. I visit my FedEx site and enter the dimensions of the box, weight and value. Shipping by FedEx Ground to Year One is $6.98 Ok, where does the $11.84 come from???? What kind of bullshit is this??? :af: :af: And to add insult to injury, they (Y1) does not include the four mounting nuts for the emblem. So, $18.82 + $2.50 package protection = 21.32 Actual shipping is $6.98 so there is a "padded profit of $14.34" which comes out to be an additional 7.6% to the part price! :af: :af: :af: I can't wait for Parts Place to start making the 70 rear bumper BUICK plate. Year One just irritates me to the core!
George you must not be a preferred customer. They shipped mine last week for a total of 197.00 . Southport N.C. I am kidding-- this is the 4th item I have ever purchased from them and they have 2 Olds decals on back order for me that they have charged my credit card for. I don't why I got a break on the shipping. John The part is great
Freight Rape It's infuriating! O.P.G. does the same of reaming(maybe worse). They charge you freight and insurance.Example:How about $8.95 freight and $4.75 insurance for a $17.95 heater box seal set? What does that weigh? Its ounces!!!I'm only 35 miles away from them.JUST NOT RIGHT!!
I orderd a bunch of stuff from year one late last year. I cant remember all what I ordered but it was stuff like.. front main seal rear main seal neutral starting switch 4 ft wire original style wire loom 2 cans of buick red engine paint 1 can of cast iron paint Trunk jack instruction decal GS350 air cleaner decal 350-4 air cleaner decal complete set of reproducion headlight adjusment screw mounts complete set of plastic headlight bezel mount complete stainless steel bolt kit wood grain dash kit Im sure there is stuff I forgot. My shipping was around $9.50. I too am in Florida (Orlando) all in one box about 18" square On top of that one of the cans of buick engine red dried flat. I called them up they sent me another totally free.
Think about the outside of the box! George, Did the box say "Year One" on it? Someone (you) has to pay to have that put on there so they can advertise to the guys that throw the box around before you get it. Printing stuff on a cardboard box ain't cheap my friend. Look at the bright side, now you have that cool box to do whatever you want with! I like to show my friends the ones I get. They're always very impressed and even dial up Year One to order stuff as soon as they see it! Wanna sell the box?
Says "NEXT GENERATION" on it. Maybe even Y1. I don't know and really don't care. To me that is a waste of money. What do you do when you get the parts????? Remove from box and discard or re-use. It, printing on the box, adds absolutely no value to the item or experience. If I want to buy a fancy box I will go somewhere else. Point is they are ripping people off on shipping which is ethically wrong!
I am finding the most vendors are starting to pad their shipping costs. I just purchased 2 door lock pull knobs (not from Y1) for $6 and the shipping cost was $6.08 ou: This shipping cost was typical for most of the vendors that sold this same part. $3 I could see but $6.08 USPS, come on... The company I work for buys 12"x12"x36" boxes with printing on them for less than $2.50 each (at quantities of 150K boxes/year). The price you got charged by Y1 was a rip-off......
check this out Remember Mail Boxes Etc? Now the UPS store. I shipped my headers to Jet Hot years ago to get them coated. They charged me $28.70 for a new box (plain) and some used packing material they had laying around. Anybody wanna guess how many times I've been to MBE or the UPS store since then?
I had a guy send me something via MBE. it was a center channel for a home theater. the box supplied by MBE was exactly 1 inch over the limit to make it into oversized packaging. and the item would have easily fit into a smaller package or if the guy dropped the box on it's end. I think the box was 8x10x23 or something to that effect.
Bought a complete brake cable kit from inline tube (along with every other gas/brake pipe all in stainless). Spent a pretty penny and found out the clips that hold the cable to the conrol arms were not part of the kit. $5 which I was ok with but $10 to ship. I said "dude, just throw it in an envelope for $.39. Nope cant do it. Anyway it came in a padded envelope and the postage was $1.47 :blast:
You guys should try living in Canada we get screwed more than you ever will in shipping :af: by UPS or FEDEX so from all of us Buick fans and collectors we feel your pain Ken
Well, maybe it was UPS charges and not Y1. I just shipped 2 boxes via UPS. Printed the postage labels from their site. Neither box was "oversized." One weighed 20 lbs, one 25 lbs. Shipping was the SAME for both, as it seems that UPS charges the same rate for anything up to 30 lbs. Add to that: the cost of the box, the cost of the packaging materials, and it cost about $30 per box for me to send them. It may have been cheaper to go FedEx, but UPS picks up at my house (I'm lazy). Anyway, my point is that the overcharge (and yes, I agree there was one in your case) may have been more the fault of UPS than Y1? Of course, Y1 should be responsible to find a better shipping deal.
Not to stir things up, but wasn't there a lengthy thread about individuals padding the shipping and "handling" costs to buyers? I guess everyone wants to get in on the action these days. Ebayers seem to be the best at that, based on my experiences.
here at briggs a single 1/4-20 screw will cost you $9.50 shipped. 1.50 for the screw and 8 buicks for shipping and handling. :spank: ou: -nate
rip-off Our hobby is full of vendors willing to overcharge or add on "handling" fees. Year One has had a bad rep for this as long as I remember. I understand people playing games with EBAY and shipping charges as it's "free" money that way vs putting a reserve price on the item. I recently had the misfortune of having a vendor do me a "FAVOR" and charge me about $6 extra on shipping for their mistake. Live and learn :Smarty: ..... About all you can do is insist on a final price before giving them your business. regards
Year One will leave off the $2.50 package protection if you ask when you place the order. They automatically put it on, but it is not required. You still have the UPS $100 insurance, all the package protection is for is Year One says if you have it, they will immediately send you a new part out without question if the first one gets dammaged in shipping. I can see where that would be worth it if you got a fender or something expensive and fragile, but for a heater box gasket kit and little stuff like I tend to buy, I tell them to take it off when I place the order.
Just got a pair of armrest bases for opg $33.45, plus $4.75 insurance and $14.95 shipping&handling, box was stuffed with FREE newspaper and weighed a pound and a half. and ups gives you $100.00 bucks of insurance
I include shipping in the cost of my reproduction window stickers  Shamless plug, sorry.... :beer
