Yes Saturn yellow can be difficult to cover. I have never heard anyone say they used yellow primer. Ask some painters on here what they say.

Yellow Will cover white or light gray sealer in 2 coats, I would recommend "Defleet" its PPG fleet line of single stage $120 to $200 for a gallon kit, the stuff is awesome has great anti sag properties, deep gloss retention and covers like a champ, very user friendly also it flows so you have to to anticipate that but its really self explanatory after the first coat

GM used gray primer on a GSX . If you want correct look use gray.

I mixed and Sprayed a spray out card of Omni. Q Q For the 70 GSX. Because Copperheads says it's the best match. with light gray primer. Yellows are bleeders! What ever is underneath will dictate what the color will be. Darker the Gray Primer The Greener it will look to the eye. I had my paint store shoot the panel with a 3-6 angle lazer. Color camera. So I can get the paint formula in Nexa. Witch use to be ICI . PPG bought the company 11 yrs. ago. I will not put Omni on a restoration.
So the Formula the computer found me to be the closest. Lamborghini code LY1K " Giallo Halys " Thought this might help you guys having problems painting these GSX. Dave I will send you a spray out card in the mail. so you can check color to your car.

The reason for me giving you guys this code is that now you can mix this yellow in anyone's paint. since it is a hard code to find with other paint lines. or they just don't have it.

Steve, I used PPG was it Omni too ? Is it the same? Original Saturn yellow did have a bit of green look to it. I no longer own my car but still have the spray out so I can compare.

Regardless of the codes the color will vary from brand to brand.

R-M and Glasurit have b/c formulas for about every old car color, and usually their colors are as good of a match as you're going to get using b/c compared to the original laquer.

Glasurit Saturn yellow was way off when we tried it.

I can mix some R-M Diamont b/c and do a sprayout if anybody is interested. It's also available in R-M Uno single stage urethane, which would have better coverage than b/c. We've had good luck with matching many of the old colors in R-M. I know there are a few members on here that I helped out with matching '71 Cortez Gold, which is a difficult color. Over the years I've had to do lot's of tinting and / or build colors from scratch.

I tried Glasurit and it was way off. Too creamy.

It would be interesting to mix up some R-M, but I don't have a sample to compare to. I can look up any BASF formula, and often I compare the Glasurit to the R-M formulas just to see the differences. Usually they go about making a color differently. Like code 26 Stratomist Blue, I got a small batch of Glasurit from our jobber to check against the R-M. On that particular one, the Glasurit was a better match.

Some companies just do better with some colors and not so good with others. Best bet is to always find someone who has a good factory representation of a color and use what they use. When guys start having stuff tweaked because they want to stay with a specific brand it rarely works out and they caused themselves needless aggravation. My friend just had some 72 olds sun fire yellow mixed which is the same as 72 Buick yellow. Tried DuPont and Ppg. In this case the Dupont was a perfect match. It is all pretty easy.

Here is an interesting comparison. On the Left is a spray out of PPG Saturn Yellow . It is what I used on my GSX. I have had the privilege to see several original paint GSX's and this paint was a close if not perfect match. The trunk latch in the middle is an original Paint GSX. You can see it is a close match. A little more greenish may show on the latch as the paint appears to be over bare metal. The sample on the right is from another member. Paint is unknown. You can see there is quite a difference.

I kind of enjoy the challenge of making a color match. Sometimes a person may end up mixing and tweaking several batches before being successful, and it can get to the point of major frustration. Especially if you're working on a customer's car with a deadline and only getting a set amount for paint material. But on a project, I don't mind spending whatever time it ends up taking. Guess I'm just kind of a fanboy of BASF paint, and prefer to use it whenever it's at all possible.

I have enough frustration in life so I used the PPG

Don, When I got my GSX it had been done in Glazurit and it was wrong. The PPg matched original parts and cars we compared it to. I have no idea what primer they used.
