I received it today and it’s very nice. Purchased through Jegs for $169.00 and free shipping. The angle isn’t as good as OEM, you need to pull it in with the fasteners. However, the installed fit and finish are wonderful. A great buy!
That does look nice. I have a question I have wondered about for some time related to the rear 'BUICK' plate on the '70 bumpers. I have seen a few bumpers with no emblem at all and no holes for emblems. Was this 'BUICK' emblem part of a certain trim level and above (i.e., not included on a base model Skylark)?
Ahh, this explains why the bumper on my Custom convertible doesn't have any holes for an emblem. It isn't original to the car...
I like plain stuff, with no holes or extra do-dads. I’ll have to get up in my loft, and check my spare bumper that I removed from a 70 post coupe. That car was pretty basic.
Year One had those reproduced. How that happened is a long and somewhat sordid story. Some years back all that you could find were used in poor condition and NOS. NOS emblems for 70 bumpers were hundreds of dollars. Another Board member and I sent a specimen to China to investigate having it reproduced. I had already approached Year One about doing this but the person in charge of reproductions declined to have these reproduced. In order to make this work, the two of us needed to commission a large number for production. Accordingly, once we decided to have these reproduced, we needed to sell some wholesale through a big player like Year One who at the time was the biggest. (This was before OPGI and The Parts Place came onto the Buick parts scene.) Consequently, I called Year One back to see if they would at least commit to buy a large quantity from us for resale. I reached the same person who immediately became irate stating they were going to put us out of business, that they were the big player in the parts field, etc. Based on my calls Year One then reversed course and decided to have the very same emblem reproduced. We then had to halt our plans at the last minute. Now the truth is we were not really trying to get into the Buick parts business to compete with anyone. We were just trying to fill a glaring need for this part in the Buick world. The experience did leave me with a distaste for Year One from whom, until that point, I had purchased many parts. As a result I made it a personal point to avoid buying Year One parts for life. I have kept that promise to myself.
One correction: I think I did buy a couple of reproduced 70 bumper emblems. YO's shipping and "handling" charges are enough to keep me away independent of this experience.
