Since there is only one cowl hood out there for our cars I was wondering if anyone added a cowl scoop to a factory hood. I have a 69 skylark and I want to add a scoop and give it a little different look. I know there are the stage 2 hood scoops at T/A performance but I’m worried about driving in the rain with one of those. Has anyone added either a fiberglass or steel cowl to a stock hood and had it come out good? Thanks guys
The universal cowls are pretty reasonable. I really love the look and I want to build one. I’m just worried about it not looking right, cracking or anything like that.
I have an 75 Dual snorkel corvette air cleaner in my Buick that i made into the Stage 2. Often thought just to drill holes on the edge of my K&N on the bottom of the air cleaner. So the water drains out onto the intake. But i don’t drive in the rain. And Don’t plan on it in the future. But on the other hand. i keep my K&N oiled. And have a light coat of wheel bearing grease on the bottom of element. To keep dust out of carb. So i don’t see water even working into the carb. That’s my .2 cents
Good point. I think the stage 2 would be too open to drive in the rain. I don’t drive my car in the rain often but it happens a couple times a year.
It wont injest enough to hurt anything unless it's a monsoon If you want to mold a cowl on be it steel or glass I can talk you thru it, on how to do it and it last indefinitely
I would do steel myself and panel bond it in place, fiberglass is easier to work with for most people and can also be bonded with no issue so I guess it's either or really
I agree, no worries on the rain. I've driven with forward facing open hoodscoops in crap weather plenty of times with no issues. You might need to replace your paper filter afterward, but if you've got a cotton/oil type like a K&N it really, really isn't a problem.
I have a fiberglass hood and 5" fiberglass cowl scoop. My cowl was put on my hood back in 1996 or 1997, and still looks perfect today. A body shop did mine, so I'm not sure exactly what they bonded it with.
That’s awesome to hear. I love the open scoop but I have really always wanted a cowl hood. It just looks badass. Hey jaye do you have a pic of your hood? Right now I’m leaning towards a steel 3” cowl bonded to my stock hood
You may be able to see it good; I had the stage 1 scoop for a couple years and didn’t like the look while driving. Got great over the stage 2 hole
That fits surprisingly well. Does anyone know if the stage 2 hoodscoop has nuts in the fiberglass to bolt it to the hood?
I put a cowl scoop on my 68 Sportwagon . Its a little hard to see , go to YouTube "Buicks @ Atco " Its the video with the white 67 GS posted , go to 4.16 minutes in the tape . Bill
There's a company Canada that make a really great looking cowl hood however, after reading some their feedback I decided not to chance it.
Since this has kinda turned into a discussion about all things hoods how do you guys feel about chevelle style racing stripes on a skylark? I have not seen one in person with them but I think it would look pretty good.
