Just doing some finish work and tuning on my efi project that I started while waiting for my new motor from Jim W. Had a stock motor on the shelf that I have put in different projects over the last 25+ years that still ran good. I have been doing tunes on the GM stuff since 2005 and got to thinking why couldn't I use a stock LS efi setup on my 455? I could use a 4L80E trany without having to use an aftermarket controller as a bonus. So after a summer of head scratching and research it works!!! Modified GN distributor Old Wildcat intake drilled for injectors Holley intake elbow EFI fuel tank Harness, computer, and sensors from a early 2000's truck Rebuilt a 4L80E I have had on the shelf for 10 years Still doing some finish work and playing with the tune but seems to run and drive surprisingly well for as little tuning as I have done. All in all very happy on how it turned out. Now just need to get the new 482 from Jim and will be having a great time next summer.
Very cool project. I was thinking about doing this on a 350 and using holley's new universal terminator x mpfi to control it. If you don't mind sharing what modifications did you do to the distributor?
The ls ecm is looking for a cam signal that is 180 on and 180 off. Just took the steel "hat" inside and modified it so the sensor was on half the time.
Just have to get the crank sensor setup just like the ls stuff. I mounted mine on the back of the crank pulley. Will pin it when everything is complete.
Thanks. There was a bit of hair pulling and words but once I figured out the crank sensor everything else was a piece of cake.
I get a real kick out of folks going into unknown territory, going where few venture. You've done just that. Be proud, you've accomplished a rate feat.
Really cool. I guess I decided for less custom work for my twin 350. SuperSniper+ hyperspark timing control.
I have questioned this also, if you could do a more complete write up that would be fantastic!!! I also have an engine with Jim, it would be great if I could put together an affordable sequential coil on plug EFI system for when I get my 470 back! Love the idea of the 4L80E too!
you two should just let JW play with it and figure it all out .. of all of us .. and then cut a LSX manifold in falf, have it laser scanned then some software to morph it into our intake and bolt pattern and SHA-Zaaaam
That (crank trigger) was my big question. They have (as you know) a pretty unique trigger wheel. I would love to know how you got that to work. Did you use HP Tuners for the tune? Definitely the most cost effective way to go EFI, with all of the junkyard stuff out there.
I just bought a replacement factory wheel and opened up the center hole to fit around my lower pulley. Made a sensor mount using the fuel pump mounting holes. Figuring out where to clock them was the hardest.
