Just some half assed failure analysis here, I don't think the exhaust had enough "give" engineered into it. Shawn had the newer style, doughnut style exhaust hangers on it. I think they were a little too stiff. So when the engine torqued over, the headers basically pulled the pipes apart. I think what also contributed was the fact that the pipes were stainless with band clamps. If the pipes had regular clamps that crimped them together, its a possibility they may have overcome the force applied by the headers trying to pull them apart. All water under the bridge now... Remember, we do this for fun! LOL
Shawn, I feel for you and your frustration. To put a really long story short: As I'm sure you know, I've had my Mach 1 since age 12. On the way back to my 10 year class reunion in it, it broke the head of an intake valve, which went through the cylinder head, and...............anyway.........took me 7 years to build the new engine for it. Once I got the engine done and dropped in, the engine had to come out 3 times, had the heads off 5 times, and had the pistons in and out of it twice. And that was within the first week of having it done, and got 30 miles put on total after all those years of building. That's the short, short, SHORT version.....I could write a whole book on just the engine debacle on that car, and that's not mentioning the trials and tribulations of the self igniting, suicide attempting Riviera.......I know buddy. I've been there. I'm sending you a PM with my phone number. Feel free to use it for texting or a call me anytime. I mean it.
Shawn you are a young man. When you get old the 3 hour jobs will take 30 days. Have been going down that road for the last few years now. Frank
Thanks for the input gents. Finally decided to come out of hiding (once the car was put into hiding). It'll be sitting like this indefinitely till I decide what I want to do with it.
I’d say it’s “hiding” right out in the wide open. Maybe call it “being in time out”. Give me a call later today.
Come a few months down the road the car will be looked at and fixed. Or the little one will be asking “Daddy can we go for a ride in the green car”
He does always like when I fired it up, giggles and smiles. Boy, wouldn't that be an ironic way to end the saga. That's an M. Night Shamallan (sp?) style plot twist there.
seriously though, just put an automatic in it for next year until you have the desire to rip your hair out again with the Muncie. Or TKO6060 it .. or Lenco ... or change your name to Joshua and use a Jericho
The Muncie is pretty well squared away I think actually (though the auto gear shifter is on my radar). It's just a culmination of things that has totally turned me off from the car. Again, it may be sitting 2019 out, it may not, time will tell. For now, I'm just glad to be over it.
http://hightowerracingtransmissions.com/ Johnny's Muncie shifter like all his stuff is second to none Haven't seen Autogear's but I have driven a chevelle with hightower's and it's hard to describe just kinda shifts itself
Holy dormant thread Batman!!! So here it is August, and I finally made an effort to get green car to a "show". Met up with my buddy Jake and his beautiful 69 Camaro, and we went to cars and coffee. A little smaller turnout then usual, but still probably 3-400 cars. No drama with the car and people apparently still like the turd. Haha. Had a nice chat with the owner of a very sharp 66 GS convertible. I guess I'll keep the big green POS around a little longer. Plus Hunter has grown very fond of the big green "boom boom!!" (as he calls it). Everytime it's in the front garage and we walk by, he's grabbing the door handle wanting to climb in. Ever seen a 20 month old drive a big block 4 speed car? Now you have....haha (Gratuitous post-cruise shot)
