I am trying to decide how best to quiet down my exhaust on both my '70s cars. Both have 2 1/2 exhaust. The Riviera has the TA system and the Convertible has the Pypes system. I could swap out the mufflers but was thinking I could wrap the mufflers instead. I don't think I want to pull out the carpet to lay down deadening material. Anyone ever have tried wrapping mufflers and did it help with the "drone" and what did you use as a wrap that worked well? tia. EDIT: Riviera Exhaust - Stock manifolds, TA 2.5" to the back. Dynomax 17733 mufflers. No 'H' or 'X' pipe 71 GS 350 Convrt - Pype headers to 2.5" exhaust W/ X pipe. Pype Street Pro Mufflers.
Sound deadening won’t get rid of drone, as Mike says change mufflers. I have so much sound deadening in my skylark I needed stiffer springs and the drone is driving me nuts...
I had lots of drone with Flowmaster 40's, a little less after changing to the shorter Dynomax Super Turbo's and completely eliminated it with Dynomax VT which I believe are no longer available. I loved the sound of the Super Turbo's except for the drone at cruising speed and my wife couldn't stand it, hence the change to the VT's. You might just want to add a couple of resonators to cure the problem.
You leave out the most important detail we need, what mufflers are you running? 17749 Walker mufflers are what you want. https://www.amazon.com/Dynomax-17749-Super-Turbo-Muffler/dp/B00029J3ES
Thank you, I had looked into mufflers and Walkers came to mind. I was hoping to avoid wrestling mufflers off, but if this is the rolling consensus then I'll do it. Regarding the mufflers currently, I don't recall at the moment the riviera has what ever muffler recommended with the TA kit - I've just "lived with the drone" for all these years and the wife a kids don't ride with me for at least this reason. The convertible has the Pypes street pro mufflers. I like the pypes sound, but there is just this RPM and engine load range that makes them annoying even with the wind blowing and the top down, it basically occurs cruising at 55 mph up a slight incline. Its just ridiculous.
Good point. Ive not considered before. The Riviera stock exhaust had resonators. Not sure the ABodies did but couldn't hurt to add. What do you recommend? I'm researching now & found some good info on the topic in mustang forums.
i had a jones on my 6.0 truck i think it was a 12 in it really took out the drone after i lost the cats.
How do the pipes, tail pipes, come out. Straight or curved downwards. If they are straight out, with a downward curve they WILL quiet up which may take care of the drone. easy to do. you may have some laying around in the garage. Tom T.
The Riv exhaust curves down like the original but as mentioned the resonators are gone. The convertible is straight. I was looking for info on tip cuts not adding tips but the appropriate angle to cut them and the effect on sound. I'm also going to drive the convertible tonight and see if I can pin point the frequency I want to quiet.
I measured the frequency of the "drone" the Riv exhaust is low, but it appears 64Hz to 107Hz is the drone range. The worst is the convertible, it is loud and broader in range for the drone. I angled the tail pipe tips and re-measured. Not a whole lot of change, higher frequencies dropped a little but in all not a noticeable change.
Here are race bullet mufflers that used to be on my car when it was stock appearing . Really quieted it down , took the bark out . Car ran 11.8x's at 110 with this setup
Back then it was exhaust manifolds , x pipe and 2.5" . Don't recall what mufflers but I'm sure they were Walkers
Here's my full configuration. Riviera Exhaust - Stock manifolds, TA 2.5" to the back. Dynomax 17733 mufflers. No 'H' or 'X' pipe 71 GS 350 Convrt - Pype headers, to 2.5" pypes exhaust W/ X pipe. Pypes Street Pro Mufflers.
Decided to go with the Walker Quiet Flows. Only put one on the convertible as there was only one in the state. more on order. Liking the results. https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p...ok0qFdQBm3qUtgOlHrUnwYY4Dy3iQj8RNOduSMYiX8x7U
