Ok folks I have not posted here in awhile I have been to busy playing this my 340 this summer. I recently got all the bugs worked out of the engine just in time for my BBC to be installed in my monte carlo ss. Any the little torque monster pulls like hell. As a matter of fact it pulls so hard that I can not hook with 235/60/15 at all. Here are my best times win catching traction past half way up the track.
    1/8 mile
    Reaction .700
    60ft 2.378
    MPH 67.17
    ET 10.272

    Red lighted on this run
    Reaction .440
    60ft 2.486
    MPH 68.64
    ET 10.394

As you can tell from my reaction and 60ft the wheels did not catch to fast. I might go to the track tommorrow with a set of slicks, but the car is a pegleg and I have a posi on the way. I do not have a lot of mods and engine is a work horse. I let another guy ride with me in my 3500lb car totalling 4100lbs with me and the car spinned all the way down the track past the traps in every gear.

Oh I am running 2004R and 3.73 in 1985 monte carlo ss. The buick engine thrus people off.

    ET with bigger tires

My ET dropped to 9.920@68.63 from a 10.272@67.17 just by going from 235/60/15 to 295/15/15. I am still have bad traction problems but once I get a posi it should come down some more. If I can get this engine into mid to low 9's I am happy. The best ET recorded for this engine stock was a 16.7 1/4 mile in a BuickGS. So I am proud of my little torque monster.:beer

    ET Update

I went to the track to test out my posi and got these numbers.

    Reaction: 1.004
    60 Foot: 2.176
    MPH: 70.77
    ET: 9.704

I am still having traction problems and my 1500 stall is not helping either. I believe I can get this engine into 8's with slicks, higher stall, racing fuel, more intial timing.

My car with me ways over 4000lbs.

I switched to 4.11 and 2004r trans, I think I should have stayed with the 3.73 but we will see. I have a 26-2800 stall coming this week and I am looking for a set of slicks for my 10" centerline rims.:bglasses:

If any one else is or has ran a 340 powered car at the tracks I would luv some comparision. I am planning on taking the engine out this winter but I am having lots of fun with it. This is my first engine to run at a track. I see why my grand dad keep this engine laying around for all the years.:TU:

    thanks Adam

A 340 in a MonteSS? That's an unusual combination - kudos to you.

There are several different ideas you might try out. First of all, the 200-4R has a really low first gear, and combined with a 4.11 gear you are really loading the tires. You could go to a higher gear (your old 3.73, or maybe even higher, such as a 3.42), or go to a trans with a higher first gear (such as a TH350). If the engine bogs, then go to a little higher stall speed converter to keep the engine closer to maximum torque RPM at launch.
Second thing is to put in airbags in the rear springs. At the track, deflate the left side and add air to the right to equalize traction. Or, re-install the rear swaybar if it's been removed. Maybe consider the control arm relocation brackets, too. Any weight you can move to the rear will help, too -such as the battery.
Third, put in some adjustable front shocks that you can fine tune at the track. Or get a set of 90/10s to use at the track (not the street!)

Maybe these will be of help to you. It sounds like your car will really scoot if you can get it hooked up!

Thanks SSportswagon, thats the type of info I was looking for. I have a big block being built a performance shop currently but if I can't get it to the ground it does no good. You have given me a starting place for improvements.

Yes Adam I put my buick engine in a 84' MCSS. ET data base I have says high 14's. My goal is to own a GN,442, and MCSS G-body. The intake has been port matched with heads that are ported and valve job. The heads have been shaved a little. I replace the dome pistons with dish piston. I had it bored .060. I am using a custom grind camcraft cam it is fairly small 210@.050 .470 lift In/Ex, 110 lobe seperation. Petronix conversion kit, recuring kit. I have 600cfm Eldebrock with 1" spacer. I had problems with the plugs fouling I tried different ones until I found some that work. I had to go with a colder plug because the compression was so high. My compression is close to 11 to 1. My car rides good on 93 octane all day every day, its a daily driver I go to work and class in it. I get about 12 miles to the gallon if I keep my foot out of it with the 4.11 and 2004r.

What I can't fiqure is that my buddies :blast:1992 Z28 with L98 350 has ran 8.32 in a 1/8th, but I have only seen it run a 9.2 with a missed up converter, and the engines hp/tq is damn near identical to my engine stock. His car does not spin so I am guess my suspension is killing my ET the most.
