I'm lookin into gettin a 70-71GS 455 for a high 10sec. daily driver, (I'm a chevy guy and have had two 70 chevelles, and like A-bodies) and have a few questions for you buick experts, since I know nothing if it aint a chevy... 1. how much does 70-71 GS 455 car (stock) weigh? no driver. 2. does anyone make hyd. roller lifters for 455s? 3. would a 455 with: 10.5:1 pump gas HP950 SP1 intake home ported TA perf. - track eliminator heads 2.19/1.74 1 7/8" or 2" headers and a hyd roller cam around 235-240 dur. make 575-600hp, and around 575tq? I'm guessin 575hp should get it done easy, even if the car is heavy. Or could you guys tell me a combo that would make around 575+hp, on pump gas and have a mild cam for a daily driver. I'd like to take some wt. out of the car - glass hood, wheels, maybe seats, but not much since it would be a daily driver, have PS, and vintage AC. Stick a 200-4R trans with a 2000 stall, and 12-bolt w/355gear in it and shoot for high 10s (on tires). Does this sound do-able? Has it been done before? I'd like to hear some buick expertise on this, or is it gonna be tougher then I think. Thanks Rafel 67 camaro 3300lbs, pump-gas 502, hyd. roller, 049 oval-port, 10"ATI, 373s, ET streets, slapper bars, w/mufflers. 1.44, 10.08@132.76 http://www.cardomain.com/id/67rs502
A hardtop would be 3600-3800 ilbs. It will take ported aluminum heads and perhaps the expetise of a Jim Weise to do that and keep enough vacuum to have power brakes and run on pump gas with some street manners. A girdle may be in oder. Check out the combos on JW's website at www.trishieldperf.com
Oh, manual brakes would be fine, but I'd like a cam thats mild (240 dur. max.) Realistically it should take 564HP to push a 3700lbs car to 125mph, according to the HP formula, HP=(mph / 234) cubed x wt. But that formula is for an efficient well set up race car, a street car will take a bit more... I hear that a buick 455 with aluminum heads and intake is about the same wt. as a SBC, so I'm hoping that I could get it down to 3600lbs race wt., which should make it easier, but I'd still like to make a minimum of 575hp (always plan on a bit extra) The cam would be the big compromise in the engine. I'd like to get my local machine shop to do the block work, and put it together myself (I'm a budget guy), do the head work myself, I think I could get 350cfm from the TA track elim. heads, since I found out that Buick heads are 15deg. and the track elim. are a raise runner design, nice chambers too. Any of you guys runnin high 10s dyno the motors? what are they makin? Would Jim Weise be willing to answer some of my questions over the phone, even if I dont do business with him or buy anything from him, and tell me if its doable.
Welcome to the board. Jim Weise and a few other guys on here may be able to help you accomplish your requests. Nice Camaro by the way :TU:
I think Track Eliminator heads need an SP2 intake because of the raised intake port. Other than that it sounds like a good combination.
An iron head 455 with an iron intake only weighs about 600 lbs so you would be below 550 lbs with the aluminum. Check this thread for the fastest street legal Buicks Ask them for their combos http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=4030&page=1&highlight=fastest+street+buick
Car Craft used a Buick 455 to make 550+ hp and they used unported TA heads. An Edelbrock Performer and a TA SP1 were both tested with a 750 Holley. Compression was pump gas friendly if I remember right and rpm was around 5700. Porting a set of heads should easily put you over the top, even without a roller cam.
The Car Craft article was the 1st thing I checked out, I believe it made around 565hp/575tq with a mellow 230/236 Comp hyd. cam. So I was thinkin with an HP950, ported heads, hyd. roller cam thats a bit bigger, theoretically it should make around 600hp which would be great. Whats a safe rpm for a stock buick block/crank, I would use aftermarket rods and pistons, and address the oil issues. Thanks for all the help guy, since I'm totally ignorant when it comes to doing this Buick thing. At the earliest it will happen this spring/summer. The reason I'm thinkin of gettin a muscle car for a daily driver is because of the gay hollywood treehuggin emission test they implemented this year here in Houston, my 91 camaro failed (230,000mi), so I was thinkin it would be cool to build a BOP car, and I've always liked the buicks (pontiacs are too expensive), and the more I looked at the buick motor, the more potential I saw for a mild cammed motor that can make good power. Hope to keep this post going, it sounds like a 575-600hp mild cammed 455 buick on pump gas is possible. Not to sound bias (like the chevy guy I am) , but I could do this with a BBC pretty easy with aftermarket heads. If the motor can make the power I believe I could make the car run the #s... Does anyone make hyd. roller lifters for the 455??? Thank guys
Ta makes hydraulic rollers but the cost is the issue around 500.00 I think.Roller cams are very expensive for a buick. You'd be better off with a flat tappet either solid or hydraulic. You will be able to make the power desired with a nice set of stg2 or stg1 aluminum heads. With good light rods and pistons 6500-7000 is exceptable but most likely 6-6500 will get the job done.
My goal is a car that can run 10 seconds in complete street trim (street tires, spare tire in trunk, quiet mufflers, etc.), and get 20 MPG- daily driven. So far, my best is 11.6 on drag radials, and I have gotten over 19 MPG on long trips. Since I ran the 11.6, I have added a nitrous shot that can give me another 150HP, but haven't had the opportunity to get it all dialed in yet. I think I will need a slight cam change to get 20 MPG, and probably go to full-length headers (I only have shorties now). I believe that the only way to do this with a mild cam (that can get good gas mileage) is to have a power adder- I chose nitrous. I am also looking very closely at the merits of a blower, and maybe even a nitrous/blower combination. Some people don't mind a rougher-running engine (with a bigger cam), but I want it to truly be mild. By the way, my car weighs about 4300 pounds (it is a four-door) fully loaded, so perhaps I could have already achieved this goal in a 3700# car. My MPH has been 118 - 119. Of course my car has no roll cage, therefore I only want to do a 10-sec run once- after that they would probably kick me out of the track (and deservedly so). -Bob Cunningham
Bobc455 Sounds like your mph would be in the mid 120s if you were at 3700lbs! Which could put a good 60ft-ing car way in the 10s. Could you post your engine combo and drivetrain and exhaust? Thanks
Rafel, you also have a fellow Texan that is an experienced engine builder, Jim Burek is his name, Building fast Buicks is his game. Goes by Buick535 on the board. His company is PAE Enterprises in El Paso . I am sure someone here has his phone #. He has been very involved in the new block project. How about a 600in pump gas buick. I am sure Jim can help with this. Cool Camaro.
So your from my town. When the weather clears you could come over and see one for yourself. My 69' is got the interior and trim pulled while we are finishing the long winded paint and body update but we just finish my brother inlaws 70' stage1 "LEAVER". We used Mike's Engine Master Challenge cam. Mild solid flat tappit combo makes 631hp at 10.2:1. We've bumped this one to 10.82 and added alittle extra head flow. Chris (engine builder) came by yesterday and installed the inner springs now that the motor is run in. G&G machine and performance, 218-351-6202 They do all the buicks around here. He even noticed when testing the oil pump that there where air bubbles on my buddies motor. Found a tiny pin hole in the extra long oil pickup tube (old parts). He's good. Can install the block girdle if you ever need one. [thread]57502[/thread]
Stage2man Have you had it out to the track yet? if youre going soon please let me know. You go to HRP? I'd love to see the car and how radical a 631hp buick sounds, and watch it run! I'm tryin to get my camaro track ready now, just installed some (used) Aerospace disc brakes on the front end - it removed almost 40lbs from the front. I should have it track ready in about a month, hoping to crack that 9.90 pass :Brow: I alway run in the cool winter weather. I have a friend that lives on the north side of Houston (I live in League City) thats gettin a 427SBC built by G&G, gonna make around 750hp, should put his 67chevelle in the 9s. Please let me know as I'd love to check out the motor/car.
Basically: Engine: 9.6 compression, custom cam from TA, iron heads with mild porting, Port EFI w/ 1000 CFM, 2-stage nitrous shot, MSD. (Engine made very strong- TA block girdle, crower rods, o-ringed block w/ copper headgaskets, custom JE pistons through TA, etc.) Exhaust: TA Shorty headers w/ 3" front pipes and 2.5" tailpipes, Straightline Performance's big case mufflers. The rest: TH400, switch-pitch, 2.75:1 first gear. Rearend is 2.56 12-bolt posi w/ Moser axles. Suspension is mostly stock except for some new HRParts-N-Stuff control arms- about 2.5 degree pinion angle. My MPH has been 118 - 119, so I would obviously be faster with a lighter car. -Bob Cunningham
