I want to install a posi into my 67 Sportwagon. It has a 12 bolt rear....I have searched but have not had much luck with finding out what fits this rear. Can anyone help me or direct to somewhere I can find the info?

    Thanks a lot,

    Rick

post a picture of the rear cover.

Was your car built in Canada or was the 12 bolt added/swapped for the original ?

It's most likely a Chevelle rear. But it could be a later Olds 12 bolt cover/10 bolt carrier.
Our resident rear expert has his own website. Lots of info on ID.

Ok, heres a shot from the back. I tried to get a decent shot, its tough with the exhaust in the way. Let me know if there is another angle that would help.

That 12-bolt cover has a 10-bolt ring gear inside unless it was built in Canada in which case it would have a Chevy 12-bolt. If the cover is smooth, it is the O-type.

I concur with the previous post. That looks like the Olds 12 bolt cover with a 10 bolt carrier. A 12 bolt Chevy has an inverted "V" ridge across the top half and the cover generally hangs over the back the the housing. 10 bolt and 12 bolt Olds has the cover smaller than the housing and you can see cast iron around the edge of the gasket mating surface.

So will a 10 bolt posi fit it since it has 10 bolt "guts", or is this application specific? Would I be giving up anything in the strength department swapping the whole rear out for a 8.2 10 bolt?

    Application specific.

It depends on which 8.2 10 bolt. Buick made an 8.2 10 bolt from 64-67, and 68-70. Parts are plentiful for the 64-67 rears, but the 68-70 rear are much harder to get parts for. In addition, Chevy also had a C clip 8.2 10 bolt, and that is not as reliable as the Buick rear which has bolt in axles.

    Rick,

I have a posi setup for the Olds type "o" . Let me know if you are interested. I believe it is a 1968 vintage. 3:08 gears.

Be sure to match your axle spline and the posi your going to buy. there are 31 ans 28 spline axle rears in these 67 68 years.

You should also find out the ratio that is in the 12 bolt olds rear. IF it came in the wagon from the factory it could already have 3.23 gears in it...??

Check it out first. KNOW what you have so you know what to buy.
