wILL SAY A 12 bolt LS carrier, ring and pinion out of a big car like a pont. catilina or a electra or a cadilac fit in a 72 skylark housing? Say 1964 - 1972 ?
This could be a big money saver

How about a chevelle 12 bolt housing? Thats what i meant, so the skylark can have 12 instead of 10. thanx

Are you talking about the 1972 car? That should have the 8.5 10 bolt with bolt in axles. Plenty strong and easy parts availability. The 12 bolt has c clip axles, and isn't much stronger. Some would argue the 8.5 10 bolt Buick rear is better.

I just swapped a 12 bolt out of my for an 8.5 10 bolt Buick to go back into it. I think it is as good or better rear end since it has bolt in axles and you can swap center sections without having to deal with the pin/spider gears.

Yes, 72 10 bolt is what is in there but, i have a 12 out of a chevelle that is a single spin and thought that i could get that to be a good posi for a beater rear end.

You will need a longer drive shaft by about 1.5" depending on your tranny choice and you will need a combination U joint if you use a Buick drive shaft as they have the 3R type and a 12 bolt typically has a 1310 type. Other than that, it is a bolt in operation once the drive shaft is accounted for. I could go back and forth between them now within about 2-3 hours.

The original question was will a big car posi fit chevelle rear and the answer is still no. Auburn makes a posi for the 12 bolt. They make one for the 10 bolt also. A 10 bolt 8.5 is strong enough to run tens but wont last long doing it. If your car is a stick I would opt for the bolt in axles myself.

    What i have is a M-21 in a gs with a very powerful 455.
i wanted to put a 12 bolt in with c-clip eliminators at 3.55 to 3.73 gears, depending on how tall my tires will be. I have a 71 chevelle 12 bolt non posi just sitting in the corner. just thought i could try to build it up kinda cheap. But if i have to buy all new innerds i wont mess with it. Sure thought that some of the big cars parts would have fit.... Dam it :ball:

The 8.5 10 bolt Buick rear is a much better rear IMHO. If you would rather have a 12 bolt, I'm sure you would have no problem selling your 8.5. Lots of guys are looking for them.

IF you have a POWERFUL 455 you would be FOOLISH to install STOCK GM parts in a 12 bolt or a 8.5. SO either spend the money to do it right or leave it alone till you do. 1?2 A-- ing it will endanger your life and others. Jim

I can quote you out parts at the best prices I can give for ALL BUICK members. Who knows it might be doable for you... Good luck and hope you make the correct step. :)
