I just pulled the 12 bolt out of my car. That was fun!

First, I'm not selling it right now but I have a buddy that really wants it for his 66 Chevelle. It was under the car when I bought it in 80.

I'd like to know what it is worth before I shoot him a deal on it. It is a 68-72 Chevy 12 bolt, 3.73 gears, possibly factory, posi, probably needs rebuild, complete drum to drum.

Hmm, nobody have a clue? I've seen them on ebay for $900 for what they report is a core and there's a disassembled case on here for $200. Just trying to get a good idea what is fair for me to offer it to my friend. I don't want to get rich but don't want to give it away either.

Well Now I guess a lot of it would depend on how good a friend this is and or if you want to KEEP your friend. I have seen MORE friendships end over stuff like this. SO I just prefer NOT to get involved...lol. I never SELL used stuff I recondition it or rebuild it etc. Please be careful with the deal ... I wish you the best
Oh 500.00 -900.00 But I do dnot know the condition...:) I know I said I wasn't getting involved... :spank: :bla: :beer

I believe your 12 bolt is wider then the one that came in a 66 Chevelle, just thought you might want to know.

1/2 inch on each side will hardly make a difference UNLESS he is intending on using stock rims with fat tires. Jim

Yeah, we know the width difference. He actually had this very 12 bolt under another 66 Chevelle and was able to run his 8" rally wheels as long as he didn't try to put above about a 245 60 under it.

We've been friends for over 30 years. I just want to recoup some of my costs without ripping him off. I actually swapped this rear with him 25 years ago when we wanted to go drag racing and I had 4.10s and he had the 3.73s. His small block bowtie needed more gear and my big block needed less.

What kind of parts and costs does it take to rebuild a 12 stock posi? Is it just clutch packs or does it take the springs, too? I believe it is the two plates that have 4 springs between them type to push the clutches tight.

Sell it to him for the value of the core, probably $300-$400 depending on the condition (rust, bushings, etc). That way he won't get pissed if he has to replace the axles, gears or the carrier. I paid $1,800 for a similar rear but that included new gears, True-trac, Moser axles, bearings and seals, gear setup, bushings, sandblast and paint, narrowed 1/2" on each side, shipping. I think the core charge was about $400.

You need to decode the numbers. Open it up and see what it has inside. I had one I sold 3 years ago. I pulled it out from under a 70 GS clone that I bought for parts. I decoded all the info I could find on it and it turned out to be a late 69 build 3:31 posi. Posted it over at the Chevelle Forum just asking what it was worth and got $1200.00 for it and the guy arranged the freight.

Clutches usually all that is needed for a stock rebuild. IF you want more tight intial lock up of the clutches for street strip action 400 # upgrade cage and spring system will work well. HArdened spider gears will also be a better upgrade too. THIS IS why I always try to just sell a complete unit to anyone with a keeper car. After those three items are purchased your cost is right up to the cost of a NEW unit. And the NEW units have thicker casting than the stock Eaton posi units from the factory.

Clutches are in the 120-200 range (depensding on the type of clutches) composite, steel or carbon fiber
spring pack 40-100 again depending on where your buying
spider gear set 100-200 depending again on the deal you can get
