I am considering having my steel wheels that will have dog dish hubcaps on widened from Stockton wheel. I would really like to have 15x8 or 15x10 inch wheels on the back. Does anyone know if the 10 in. will fit under my stock wheelwells? If so, what size tire and backspace do you suggest? If I have to I'll get the 8 in.and use 275/60/15 tires.

Another problem that someone may be able to help with. What type of tool do you use to get the dog dish caps off the rims.A screwdriver is not recommended.

Pat,I just went thru this ordeal in December with my 70GS.8 or 10 inch will fit but they most have at least 5inch backspacing with no more than a 28inch tall tire;Watch the sidewall width,I tried a 29 inch tall tire on a new 10 inch wheel but it only had 4.75 inch backspacing even trimming the wheelwell it would not work.I had to return wheels.tires and lugnuts to Summit thankfully they gave me credit even though I removed all the HOOSIER side wall paint and had mounted them I did'nt even have the origianal Crager boxes, but they accepted them.It cost me 88.oo bucks to return everything but It could have been an expensive mistake780.00 dollars worth of the wrong parts.I picked up a different set or aftermarket alum. wheels I think they call them warriors from crager 10inch with the 5 inch backspacing and a 28inch tall tire I should be good to go.Good Luck:TU:

I have a set of Wheel Vintiques 15x10 Buick rallyes being delivered this week. They have 5" backspacing. I will be mounting 325/50R15 DragRadials on them and stuffing them under there by this weekend.

I will post as soon as I see if these tires will fit with no mods. Tires are 28" tall with a 10.4 tread width. It's gonna be close. Hope I don't have to ebay these tires.

    new wheels

Pat here is my car with wheel vintiques brand new rims 15x8 with 4 7\8 back space, MT 11.5x28tirres and 15x6 up front . If you use your rim you will have to pay shipping there and back along with a 100.00 per rim to be widened.I believe the fronts were 58.00 and the rear 62.00 unpainted.

    thanks

    Dave,
Do you know the web site or phone# for Wheel Vintiqes? Where are they from too? Thats exactly the look I'm looking for. Want to run a 28 or 29 inch slick or the 275/60/15 without rubbing.
    Thanks,Pat

    Here you go:

    http://www.wheelvintiques.com/

    Good luck.

I was running the 275/60R15 DragRadials on 15x8 rims, 4-1/2" backspacing, with absolutely no rubbing problems at all. I had 1.5" clearance on the inside and 1.25" clearance on the outside. That tire is 28" tall.

    Dave,

It's hard to tell with the reflection off the caps, but are those the poverty caps on your ride?

I have a decent set of them and would like to put them on my '69. 15x7 front and hopefully 15x8 or 10 in the back. I was looking at the rims at Vintiques. Which ones did you go with?

    Thanks for your time.

Jim they are a buick cap later models. I used the style 62 wheels under the nostalgia section. The rears are 15x8 with 4 7/8 bs.

    wheel width critical

I have weld pro star 15x10 with 5.5 inch backspacing on my 72-with bf goodrich drag radials in 315-60-15. thats 12 inches of tread on the ground with a 30 inch height!! (I did this with a 69 chevelle as well many years ago) HERE ARE THE PROBLEMS YOU WILL FACE: the outer wheel house lip will have to be folded up flat against the inner side of the 1/4 panel accross the top and around the end curves. with wheel removed, I used a hacksaw to carefully slit the wheel lip right below the curve at front and rear, then used a 3 lb ball peen hammer to flatten the lip. (no i did not damage the paint-on either car) now, reach up inside the outer wheel house/1/4 panel surface above the lip-right in the center of the opening-or look up inside with a light-you will feel or see a 4 inch long by 4 or 5 inch tall sheet metal bulge into the tire area. if your outer tire sidewall is close to the wheel lip at all (like mine is) on big potholes, the tire goes up inside and the sidewall hits this bulge and scrapes the sidewall. no matter what you do about the wheel, you cannot avoid this situation if you want to run BIG tires/10 inch wheels and drive on the street. mine also touched the front inner frame rails on steep driveway entrances, due to slight housing shift on the turn in, but a 1/8 inch spacer on each side cured this-although that made the outer sidewall problem worse. adding airbags inside the springs with ony 6 lbs in them cured all but the very worst pothole induced scrapes, with only slightly harsher ride. if you are having wheels made, it gets easier, as the welds only came in 1/4 inch increments. if having wheels made, having done this twice, I would request 53/8 backspace on a 10 inch or better yet i would ask for a 9.75 width with 5 inches inside, although i am not sure they will build that. Is it worth it? YOU BET!! i constantly have people looking under my car and then asking how i did that without tubbing it. it looks great and the added tire height allows me more gear ratio flexibility. i ran a 3.89 gear for years with the big tires and had decent cruise rpms as well as good low gear accelleration a t the track. good luck, hope it turns out as well as mine.
