I have a 64 wildcat with 15x8 on it and 3.750 backspace. Can i get away with 17"x8 and 4.5 backspace? Does some one on here ever installed 17" on a 64 wildcat or lesabre,and knows the answer for me?? Thanks wilfred
Wilfred, back when I was planning on putting 17's on my car, I measured and a 17x8 with 4.5in backspacing should have fit. Can't comment directly on a '64 though. I ended up going with some old school 15in slotted mags instead .
Why should back spacing change? You are going from an 8" wide wheel to another 8" wide wheel. Wheel diameter should not matter, you'll just be using a shorter sidewall tire. If you want to find out if you can go with more back spacing, just get out the tape measure and see if you have the clearance. You shouldn't need a change in back spacing unless you want a much wider tire on that 8" wide rim.
Measure the distance from the tire to the inside of the fenderwell and other potential obstruction such as exhaust pipes or shock mounts. If you have at least 3/4" of clearance now you'll be ok with the additional backspacing. BTW, nice looking rig. I lived in "Nederlands" for two years and never saw an American car of such magnitude. How do you find parking spots?
