It's sold, but I have 2 questions... I really like this year and color combo, but I miss the port holes https://www.motoexotica.com/inventory/listing/1958-buick-special-riviera-hardtop-coupe/ What is the purpose of the chrome trim "handles" on the trunk lid, and the front seat looks like it's sitting on 2/4 piece of wood. Is that factory? or a metal support? The rest of the car looks pretty original and... I can't stop staring at this car. The color actually makes me feel happy.
It's a Special, so it's the lowest priced Buick for 58. A modern comparison would be the LeSabre. The seat is on wood, that is definitely not factory, and those chrome handles were added on, I can't remember ever having those on ours. The owner who installed the lumber must be all of 5 foot nothing...
The handles were on all series except Roadmaster and Limited, which had a lower trunk bar that had a built-in handle. It went all the way across the lid at the lower lip. Special, Century, and Super all had these handles so you could actually lift the trunk lid without putting stress on the key if you tried to lift it like that. The lids are a PITA to lift without something to grab on to. Also, as stated, the wood is not factory...looks like a very short owner needed a boost
Thanks for the explanation! I guess in this era, the trunk has no assist when you unlocked it. My 68 wildcat trunk almost hits you in the chin when you open it.
mine has those trunk handles. I can close the trunk with those and not get my grubby finger prints on the trunk's paint
My '57 Benz has them incorporated into the lic plate bulb holders. I just hadn't seen it on other cars. On the upscale 220S there is a handle above the plate.
