Hey just found this rear ...VERY nice! rEMOVED FROM A EARLY 60'S RIV WITH THE HIDER HEADLIGHTS. THIS REAR IS HUGE!!!!!! Anyone know where the code will be to know what gears came in this rear? I am probably going to open it but just wanted to know BECAUSE. I know I am suppose to know cause I do rear diffs....Guess what I don't...lol. I am sure it is on the third member but what would the codes be for 3.08 3.23 3.42 etc. THIS IS A LIMITED SLIP UNIT TOO. NEAT... :Brow: o No: :TU:
Of course one way to tell is mark the pinion & drum & count the number of turns. On the "Big" rears on the very bottom center of the housing, not the 3rd. member, will usually be 2 numbers. 07=3.07 23=3.23 42=3.42 etc.
rEALLY...??? not ON THE THIRD MEMBER? tHAT WOULD NOT MAKE SENSE WOULD IT? Oops sorry about the caps..lol. on th epontiac olds drop out rears they are maked on the drop out third member...Why not the buick too? I will look the housing is very clean. Jim
Nice find. The '65 Riv has the hideaways and that, with the ST400, had 3.07 gears as standard. Saying that we parted a fairly low option car awhile back and it had 3.23. Now get as 'up' on these babies as you are with the others! I've been told that the posi plates, ect are same/similar to more modern parts and may be usable in rebuilding-would be nice to know
Here is some info pulled directly from the Riviera Owners Association. 1963 - Ratio is stamped on the bottom of the axle housing - two numbers - one above the other. Example: 3 over 2 is 3.23-1; 2 over 78 is 2.78-1. Locking axle (positraction) is identified by "X" in a circle on bottom of carrier flange. Ratios available (all models): 2.78; 3.23; 3.42; 3.91. 1964 - Location same as 63. Ratios available (all models): 3.07; 3.23; 3.42. 1965 - Ratio and I.D. are stamped on the bottom of carrier flange. Example: an X inside a circle; Locking axle; PA ratio code; 203 - Manufacturing day of year. CODES (all models) RATIOS PA, PN 3.07 PC, PP 3.42 PD, PR or Ratio # Special Order * *Special Orders: 2.78 - 3.23 - 3.36 - 3.58 - 3.91 - 4.45.
nOW THAT IS WHAT i AM TALKING ABOUT. gOOD INFO THERE. OOPs darn caps on again... I will give it a look. There was not much left of the car to tell the year. I will look in all those spots. I know I am going to tear it down anyway and clean and reassemble etc. But just incase I get someone that wants it as is I will know the ratio etc. Jim Thanks again for the good info. :beer
