Hey guys, I am currently refreshing my rear diff on a 1964 Electra. I have the diff housing out and stripped down. i am taking the axles to the driveline shop tomorrow to replace the axle bearings and it occurred to me that the axle seals are inside the axle tubes the the bearings are outside of the seals. My question is: How do the bearings get lubrication?
Bearing are pre-lubed from the manufacture like a front wheel drive Hub Bearing system. Not all terrible just requires replacement a bit more often BUT since were having tons of trouble with the OILED BEARINGS and seals not in spec. I will take the sealed bearings over the oiled in this day and age. Sealed bearings just have a life and when they get older the sealed bearing will start to leak its grease and soon there after will fail. TROUBLE if you do not catch this failure quick enough the bearings can seize to the race and spin on the axle shaft cause irreparable damage of the shaft preventing a new bearing from being properly pressed on as the shaft. Lose of diameter from the seize of the race on the shaft will cause a loose press or no press at all. Just have to be careful and replace every 30K, WHICH in Muscle cars is NEVER...lol. Jim JD
