So next weekend is the swap meet at RaceWay Park. I am about to disassemble my GS and will start with the frame. Eastwood will be there and was wondering what the correct finish is and is it the best? I figured i'd save a few bucks on shipping. Your recommendations???

Eastwood has that new ceramic chassis black coating ...o No: they didn't have it when I did mine ...I used the extreme chassis black
Yea I remember talking to you about this once before. Now do you think it's better than let's say using por 15 then final sand and paint with some chassis paint? A friend of mine has done numerous restorations and said that this method looks the best and is the most durable because the por 15 really adheres to the frame steel and rusty areas. Please your thoughts and how many frames have you restored? How does it hold up? I know you used the previous eastwood method.
I sandblasted frame and then epoxy primer and then paint with eastwoods extreme chassis black ....came out nice (its a mess but I love sanblasting:grin: ) I just recently used por15 on the inside cowling area and was surprised how the por15 went a long way by brush and dried smooth and shiny imo.... if your going to sandblast ..go the epoxy primer way and then eastwood if your just going to rough it smooth I think the por15 is way to go....btw wear gloves oh..and its my first frame ...so far its just a dust collector ...working on shell ...
Nice. At least your working on it. I have to send it to someone to do. I don't do body and paint but i'll do just about everything else. Setting up the engine trans and rear. Also interior and the frame plus bushings and suspension. I wish I could spray. I'd love to see a powder coated frame lookin4a67gs.
It depends on your budget, and who is doing the work. Best method would be to sandblast and powdercoat or paint. Figure about $150 for blasting, and $450 for powdercoat. Prices vary widely! If you are doing it yourself, it would depend on what type of prep work you can do. Por-15/Eastwood paints can give decent results over less-than-pristene metal. Wire brushing will usually suffice for these. www.buickperformance.com has a nice write up for DIY'ers. Please read the hazard warnings on the paint labels before you use them!...the Eastwood ceramic is pretty nasty stuff when sprayed. Personally, I like sandblasting (a weekend), then epoxy primer and black epoxy paint....another weekend and $200 for supplies. At $600, powdercoating is a decent deal..,..and frees up some weekends for :beers2: :laugh: When you go to E-town's swap meet, stop by Ground-up's spot and pick up a catalog. They're Chevelle guys, but they have a lot that fits our Buicks. Hey remember Bernie with the mint green '65 at Yardley's Picnic? He just picked up a 65 GS 4 speed car and is doing a frame off!
Thanks walt. I will do all the work myself so I think i'm going to go the por 15, then final sand and paint for a smooth finish. What do you recommend for a final finish? The black epoxy from east wood? Does ground up have a site where they might post their spots? And of coarse I remember Bernie. What a nice guy and his 65 lark was pretty sharp. I was hoping to see him on the board but I guess some of those older guys just can't be bothered with the computer.
Joe, If I had mine to do over, I'd powdercoat. I've seen a 65 GS 4 speed car that was restored locally that was done that way. It turned out beautiful. I blasted/painted mine, and the cost was roughly equal. Mark
Ground Up is at www.ss396.com The Pontiac suppliers have a lot for us too....Performance Years, and Ames Performance. They're at Carlisle, but I dunno if they do E-town too. I haven't used Eastwood chassis paint, or the newer POR-15, so I can't comment. But I hear foam brushes work well. Yeah, Bernie is up to 3 65's, and 2 hot rods!! He and Marty are my idols, I want to be just like them some day...retired and working on old Buicks!:TU:
Yeah. Look in the yellow pages and get some quotes for everything....frame, control arms, A-arms, crossmember, maybe even core support and inner fender wells. It's too easy....take them the parts, give them money, and bring home perfect parts a week later!

That rotisserie was allready sold.:rant: I'm gonna get one sooner or later, but the car is coming off the frame probably this weekend. ray: I will put it on horses for now and do some light surface sanding and prime it up until I get to the body. I'm doing the frame first.:TU: And one is all I can handle. I'm out of room!!!:eek2:
Oh and I went with the eastwood 2K ceramic chassis paint. I should have it by monday. I will be starting a restoration thread on my car. So check it out, from beginning to end.
