Found a true 1965 Sport Fury 426 street wedge car. It is original with 426 (365 hp, single four barrel) street wedge, 4spd, drag pack. Has buckets, console 4 spd with tach in console. Still has original hubcaps.

Car will run and drive, but needs interior work and paint. Minor body work due to slight rust in driver rear quarter (patch panel). However it is a southern car so not too bad. Floors, trunk, etc real solid. Needs gas tank and lines flushed.

Any thoughts on this car? I think I can get it fairly reasonable but I know mopars are expensive to restore.

An aquaintance just bought it from the original owner's son.

P.S. factory carb is missing and they put an edelbrock in it's place.

Opinions? Were the street wedges respectable/reliable?

    Plymouth Fury

Had two '64 Plymouths, Sport Fury with a 318 and a Fury with a 426 wedge, both were automatics.
Bought the 426 new, loved that car and would like to get another someday. Had it for six years and sold it to buy a 69 Charger. Never raced it at the track but had alot of fun with it on the street.
It ran strong but didn't like the rain. No matter what we did to it, it was hard starting when it was wet.
Wife didn't like to drive it so we bought the other one for her.
As far as being expensive to restore, which car isn't? I've done ten cars and everyone cost more to do than the one before it, except for my SC/Rambler. Put it together as cheap as I could, and it looks it, but I'm having more fun with it than the trailer queens of the past.
Not to rant on, but the cost of parts to restore any car is getting to the point were a working person just cann't afford it. Maybe thats why I have two projects sitting in the garage.
Getting back on the subject, yes my Plymouth was a fun car and like I said before, I'd love to have another. Bob

I have a local car buddy that had a 64 max wedge and said he made the mistake of trading for a new 65 max wedge. The body size was much bigger and he says it was a dog. He quickly traded again for a 3 deuce 66 442 Olds which he still has. He claims the Olds was much quicker than the 65 max wedge.

gotta clear up a couple items

Drag pack isn't an option on these cars (actually a Ford name). Chrysler's Track Pack and Super Track Pack didn't become available until later on in the '60's.
No Max Wedge in '65. The Hemi replaced the Max Wedge in & around Feb. of '64. The single 4bbl Street Wedge was still available though.

Yes, the street wedge was a dog due to head design and log exhaust manifolds. Good upgrade is the "906" 383/440 Magnum head and HP exhaust manifolds. Car is pretty rare and parts can be hard to find but I could help you find some of the pieces. I have a friend w/ a '65 Belvedere I 426 street wedge automatic car that is really nice and I know he had a few spare parts.
