1966 GS body mounts

Discussion in 'Chassis restoration' started by Paul Massicotte, Feb 28, 2013.

  1. I've read Dave's breakdown for the mounts for 70-72 cars here: http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=261123

Are the 64-67 mounts the same size/dimension as the 70-72?

If they're different, does anyone know the correct part numbers?

Paul, I have a ton of notes on the '66 body mounts. How close to original do you want?
In short, the early cars' mounts are 3/4" thick. The later cars are 1".
Start with a generic kit for a '64-66 'vert. At the time (2007), Ground Up had a kit with very nice hardware.
The kits bushings will work on all locations, but if you want it to look more original, substitute some of them:
    - The mounts over the rear axle, oldcarstuff.com #BM 11 or Restoration Specialties #20024.
    - Mounts behind the rear wheel are a larger 2.6" diameter. I'll have to research what I bought.

Rad support bushings were real tough. I matched some up at a swap meet and drilled out the ID. They were from Restoration Specialties.

Here are the GM part numbers, if you can match them up somewhere.
    #1 & 2, cowl) 1377362 mount, 1377369 insulator
#3) 1377363 mount, 1377369 insulator. This mount fits the smaller hole in the frame of this location.
    #4 & 5, over axle) 1377364. Puck style
#6 trunk) 1377365 mount, 1377369 insulator. Mount is a larger diameter
#7 rear) 1377366 mount, 1377369 insulator. This mount 'might' be a bit thicker, maybe 1/16"

  3. Thank you Walt. I'd like to get them as close to original as possible, in terms of ride quality. If there's no special secret source for the 64-7 mounts as there seems to be with the 70-72 cars, I wonder if everyone gets them from the same supplier? I'll take a look at Ames, Ground Up and CARS.

I think I'm going to have to go through the CARS link there and see if any of the dimensions they give match up.

Check out Inline tube new products for Olds. They now offer very close substitutes to the stock mounts. I bought some from Fusick Olds in a kit and they look the same as the Inline tube. I think Inline screws alot of stuff up but these look very close at least to 70 style maybe earlier as well. Nice thing is you can buy them in singles. Does your year use the cushions with the molded in washers? If yes the Cars BM644A is the only way to guy. They are superior to anything else on the market.

The Inline Tube set looks decent. It includes the press-in 'puck' bushings for over the axle. Can't tell if all the bushings are all the same 2" OD, or have the correct oversize ones too.
Bolt kit looks good too.... it has the flanged bolts with pointed end.
You better hope they send you what is pictured..... I hear they are a pita about returns.
The Ground Up kit costs much less. No puck bushings, it just uses the bolt-thru cushions for that location. It does have flanged bolts, but without the pointed ends.

Kits from elsewhere often just have hardware store grade, shiny zinc-plated hardware.
For the best repo bolts, go to AMK products.

  6. Thanks. I'll report back with what I purchase and how it looks.

Not sure what the Inline kit will give you but the singles are good. The kits may short you two mounts under the firewall as other GM used less.

  8. Thanks Dave. Did you edit your reply? The instant email I got when you replied doesn't match your reply above.

I can't find the single Olds mounts in the "Oldsmobile new parts"

I'm going to dig out the bag of mounts I took off the car and measure before I order anything.

Paul good thought. Also could you post a picture of the mounts and cushions. I am wondering if your year used the good cushions with molded in washers? I will check the inline site again. I did edit the post as I ma mnot sure on the kits they sell but they may include the correct ones.

Paul, check out this link and scroll down about 48 boxes or so. They are there.

  10. So here's what I have for mounts:

Walt- looking at your list of mounts and their locations on the frame, it looks like I have too many 1377366 which you list as going in #7.

I'm sure I'm missing a few, but this is what I saved.

Should I assume the 2.85W mount is the core support mount?

  11. In case anyone's wondering, the kit from inlinetube is a generic 64-67 convertible kit that anyone sells and doesn't come with the pucks as their catalog shows.

Paul, did you get the bolt kit from Inline tube? If so, how do they look?
The extra mounts in your pic do look like the rad support mounts. Got mine from Restoration Specialties. They should be at Carlisle so I'll try to get a pn.

  13. No I got the bolt kit from AMK. They look correct.

Let me know about the core support mounts when you get back from Carlisle. If you want some $ to grab them when you're there for me let me know.

  14. Just to update- the 2.85 wide mounts aren't the core support mounts. I found the core support mounts in another bag.

They are actually the mounts that go directly under the doors. The diameter of the holes in the frame is smaller at this location and that mount fits perfectly.

I bought the bolt kit from Inline Tube and they look very good: Black oxide, Grade 5, Flanged with the shouldered shank. These are for a 65 GS and I think there are two shorter bolts which did not come in the kit. Also bought the bushings and as stated they are generic with no pucks or the larger diameter ones behind the rear wheel or the ones just in front of the rear wheel.

The generic mounts fit there if you trim the rubber to fit the smaller opening in the frame. OD should be the same as #1 and #2 at the cowl.

I looked for the rad support bushings at Restoration Specialties' Carlisle spot, but they didn't have any with them. I'll try to find the one's I bought and measure them.

  17. That's what I ended up doing. Hopefully the body goes back on the frame this weekend.
