Anybody install 17 inch wheels on a 1968 or 69 GS? If so what size did you use? What tire size front and rear? What's the widest tire on a 17 inch wheel on the back and front with out any modifications? What back spacing for front and rear? ANY help would be appreciated.

    Tom,

I went with 245/45/17's in the rear and 22/45/17's in the front, with standard backspacing, whatever that is ( I think either 3 1/2 or 4). I had to trim a very little bit off the inside of the rear quarters, maybe a 1/4 inch or so. Didn't trim any of the chrome trim. They fit without trimming, but it was tight enough that it scared me.

I have Boyd Coddington Smoothie II's, and Falken tires, paid $1,500 for the whole set up, brand new about 4 years ago. I like them, except for the fact that they are polished billet instead of chrome. Billet is a lot more work, although it is easier now that there is a Mequire's power ball!

You could probably get away with 4 3/4 inch backspacing and a bigger tire, but I didn't want to wait to special order them. I think someone on this board did the measuring, but I can't recall for sure.

I bought 2 inch drop coils springs for the front from Original Parts Group (www.opgi.com), I think about $189. It lowered it about 1 1/2 inches to 1 3/4 inches from the stock height. Just low enough that you need to buy a low profile jack to get under the front end as a standard Sears crafstman type is too tall. I don't have disc brakes, or I would have got dropped spindles. I didn't lower the rear, as I like the look after I did the front. I have 115k mile springs in the rear, so they already sag a little. I would think 1 inch drop in the back would be about right. The 68/69 body lines already make the rear look low anyway. When mine sat level, it look lower in the back.

    Thanks, Chris
