I have a 68 Corvette and need the the new windshield installed. Robert Schmelzer has recommended me use a NGA certified installer. The old one is removed and have a dated new one to have installed. This is a frame off complete restoration and need to find some one who knows these cars to install this windshield. I live in central northern MD. Thanks AL.
Al, I used to be a corvette guy too. Had 65 & 66 small block coupes, 71 LS5 convert, 80. and 95 ZR1. All of them were manual shift except the 80. Having said that, shouldn't you be asking this question on a different board that has the persnickety corvette perfectionists on it?
68 Corvette Windshield Install Mike, I did get a PM from a installer but he is way to far away. As per the person who does this it would be a easy clean install, AL.
Al, Same process to install a Skylark windshield applies to Corvette. All you need is some 3/8" butyl tape seal available from Autozone for $12 and you are set. You can contact any glass shop in your area to do the work, won't take more than 10 mins to install.
Al: George is right, it's not that difficult. The hard part is already done because you've already taken out the old window! Make sure that the channel is completely clean of all of the old tape. When you put the new tape in the channel, find a place where the channel is wide enough to just overlap the ends so there's no leak. I suggest you have 3 people doing the job (that's how I do it) - two on the outside holding the windshield and one on the inside pushing back at you (keeps you from accidentally sticking when you're not ready) so you can position the window. Once you're in place, start at one end and work your way around pressing the window against the tape. Because this is a frame-off resto, pay attention to how straight your tape is with the lines of the car. Remember, you only get one chance - once you contact the tape with the window, you'd better have it where you want it. Not hard to do, just take your time. Good luck! -Paul
68 Corvette Windshield Install Thanks for the posts :beer A s far as the prep work the window frame is hospital clean. My concern is getting it in right because its a exspensive windshield (dated). AL
Not only do you need the tape as mentioned. You also need the pinch weld channel primer. This is applied to both the edge of the glass & the pinch weld BEFORE you install the glass. Most times in the tape box comes some little rubber pieces. These are placed at the bottom of the glass to hold it in place & stay there for the duration. Without them the weight of the glass will make the glass slide down. If they are not included you can use any piece of rubber to hold up the glass or even pieces of carnboard.
These are a big help! I just bought a pair from Harbor Freight, they had them on sale two for $5. What a deal. Makes handling glass very easy! You can find them at other stores like Autozone. They may be at Home Depot too! http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=40993
68 Corvette Windshield Install After seeing the installers at work one time, I think I may do this my self. After seeing a guy laying on his back with his feet on the dash kicking the old one out of a van. That van would have been mine you know where my foot would have been!!! Well, I'll first see who my painter of my 84 Century wagon used and go from there. It does not leak and didn't damage the new paint on that install, AL.
Al: Go for it, it's not that difficult. If you get stuck, post a question and we'll help you. If I lived closer, I'd come over and help! -Paul
Al - I live in Kensington MD if you extra hands. Where in Northern MD are you. Can't be that far from Kensington
68 Corvette Windshield Install It looks like 58.25 miles and 1 hr 10 mins :eek2: . Are you a installer? AL. :beer :TU:
