Seem to be having alittle trouble with the igntion switch key cylinder now on my 68 nova ss .I put the key in it monday morning to put the car back in the garage .When I went to shut the car off;the igntion switch would no longer move to the off position;finally had to remove the battery cable to shut the car down.It was definetly the correct key;remember on a 68 nova the key is in the instrument panel;the way that I remember and have looked up in some old books is to set the igntion key to accessory position and take a paper clipand push on the plunger in the key cylinder and jiggle the switch around to remove the key cylinder;the problem is you cannot move the key cylinder to the acc position to line up the marks.any ideas how to remove the key cylinder;besides removing the whole panel and taking a dremel tool to get the key cylinder out;and only two weeks until the stock appearing drags here in Florida;holy sh-t.Chris Teed

    Chris.

You can sacrifice the retaining ring around the switch to get it out. If you're careful, all you'll have to replace is that ring (and of course the lock cylinder). Happened on just about all the 68's I've had.

Sometimes the copies made from worn keys do this, did you try all the keys you have in it?

I'm sure you already know this but the key blank on the 68 is unique to that year only. Not hard to find correct blanks(ebay, Year One, etc.) but the keys are not the same with the coded knock outs.

    Chris,
NAPA and most other chains sell ignition switches. Not original, but that would get you running long enough to race. Then you could replace that with the correct repo's after the weekend.
