1968 skylark buick newbie

Discussion in 'Wet behind the ears??' started by Southphillysteve, Nov 22, 2021.

  1. Alright so a little background here, built a few ford's, alot of chevys, some Honda, I'm not new to the car world just new to buick. I picked up a pretty straight rust free 68 skylark from a guy who stripped it down and was never going to put her back together, as a car guy I couldn't pass up the chance to get this Ole convertible back on the road, plus my kids have been begging me to get a convertible since I sold my wrangler

Now onto the rough part, have absolutely no trim panels or moldings, no motor no Trans, this is literally a project car....

Question 1 I have a 77 buick 350 and an u know year bop th400, assuming it's from the lTe 60s early 70s, will these just drop in, hoping so cause if not I have to source a drivetrain

Question 2 who's got parts for sale or donation cause this Ole buick will be on the road by spring even if I have to drive it missing all the interior trim and moldings

Plans are to make her a driver that me and the kids can run down to wildwood nj, Ocean city Maryland am open to any and all suggestions for drivetrain because buick is new to me, I'll try to post up some pics tonight

Any year Buick 350 will bolt in. The 400 trans is overkill but will work just fine. The 400 will bolt up to the Buick engine as long as it is a BOP transmission.

  6. It's bop, missing the top bolt to be a chevy

Welcome from Florida! This place is awesome for the technical support and to find parts. Check out the part-out section in the for sale stuff to. I was able to get some small stuff that I couldn't find anywhere else from a couple of the awesome folks here, using that section.

  9. It's a long tail 400 so I'm gonna need to slap it in and get a driveshaft measured and probably made

Max Damage I'm working on it!

Welcome! Another 1968 owner! I hope you don't need fenders...

That hood in your photo isn't a 1968 hood. If it's a 1969 (GS) hood it will fit.

Welcome! Nice that you're going to save it & ambitious project/timeline for someone that's never had one of these (& even for someone who has). I'd recommend getting an assembly manual (as well as chassis & body service manuals). It'll answer a lot of questions. They're available on eBay.

Personally, I wouldn't use a TH 400 at all & esp. not a long shaft. I have a TH 350 from a '70 Skylark I'm getting ready to pull and you can have it (I'm just south of Baltimore). I've never driven it but would be shocked if it didn't work. I may even have a driveshaft but one out of any '68-70 Skylark w/a TH 350 should work assuming your car has the orig. rear.

@Stage 2 iron has a TH 350 for sale on here and doesn't live far from you. @nickbuickgs is a big '68-9 guy and has a resto shop on the north side of Philly & might have some of the trim parts you need.

    Good luck! Post your progress!

The ‘69 hood is a very cool item; I think they look great. They are worth good money, though; if you can live with a flat hood you could sell that one and buy a lot of parts…
