    Hi,

I am driving my original 1969 Buick Riviera in The Netherlands (Europe)
it is very quite but in the future i want to sound it a bit more V8. I hear and see all kinds of Flowmaster mufflers who sound to me
too loud, sharp when they hit the gas. I am looking for a muffler on my
Riv that sounds a bit less hard and a bit rounder, not too agressive/sharp
just that open American 60's big block sound. Any 430ci driver has a tip for me? Also where to place the mufflers, 2 at one side or just 1 muffler p/side?
Also i do not want it too sound too low/deep. Just a nice sound.

    Thank you Robbie

    Robbie, Glad you are here.
I have had 2 68 Rivs in my life time. Basicly the 68 and 69 are the same. I always take the back resonators off and put just a straight pipe. This gives more of a 60's sound and lightens the veh. a little. It has a grumble that is slightly noticeable but not obnoxous at speed. If you want more, then use the long turbo mufflers.

    Hy Robbie,
Where you from in The Netherlands?
I have turbo mufflers under the Riv. Both sides a muffler.
It has a nice sound and not to loud.
    I bought them at http://www.tyra.nl/
Do you also know there is a Buick club in The Netherlands?

    Hi Bart,

I am from The Netherlands. So are you i can see, so
we can speak dutch? There use to be a Buick Club.
Now i think it is only a Boattail club.

    P.s. I have owned a '68 Riviera from '96-'04 and
in november '05 i bought an 100% '69 Riviera from the first
owner in California. Very low mileage car.

    Talk to you more later!
    Robbie

    Hi doc,

Thank you! OK, the thing is that i am an original freak so straighten
the rear exhaust pipes will be to much of a batter for me i think.
I bought this low mileage '69 riv november '05 in CA it is 100% original everywhere and i am trying to keep it as much as i can, you know.

I had a stainless exhaust system on my '68 that i had from '96-'04 with
2 mufflers on both sides but it sounded too low and too loud at almost
any speed. Maybe i could try it with removing the original rear mufflers
what do you think, would that be a bit more V8 yet?

    Thank you,
    Robbie

OK, but i was thinking that you leave the rear mufflers.......but you keep
the exhaust to go over the rear axle right? Thanks Robbie

Hi Bart, You are right, i misunderstand you about the Buick Club.
I hope to be there at the Buickmeeting in the summer.

    Thank you, Robbie

hi. i have a '68 riv with headers, 2.5" pipes running thru flowmasters, and 3" (i think) tips in front of the rear tires. hindsight being 20/20, its way too much. the flowmasters are too loud, just like you said, and the 2.5" pipes sound too 'low', even at idle.

if i had to do it all over again, i think i'd get the headers (very expensive) and keep the rest stock. or maybe put some cherry-bombs, or some other hot rod muffler. that's way cheaper and easier than those t/a headers (which i like, but cost an arm and a leg).

i wish i were in amsterdam right now.

    Hi Howrad :TU:

    What's in Amsterdam right now??
I live 60 miles from Amsterdam.
I don't know what is going on there right now.

You are one of the few guys with a 68 Riviera that has headers right?
Do they give more power on a stock engine? I can't imagine that.
I had a 68 Riviera from 1996-2004 with a complete stainless exhaust on it
only one muffler at the end of each pipe.....i hated the sound at some moment. constantly there, too loud and too deep/dark sound.
Now i have it originally stock and the only thing i will do is remove the
resonators at the back when they rust out and see how it sound then.
(thanks to my friend Doc! Thanks again man!)
Also i am not going to put a stainless exhaust on it again in the future.
Just the aluminum steel ones, the sound less dark and deep i think.

Why don't you come here in the summer and drive along to the US and
Buick meetings?? Would be great to have a guy with his Buick from the US over here!!

    Robbie

my engine was stock when i put the exhaust on. no noticeable power increase. none. just louder. my old iron manifolds were pitted beyond use and i had some extra cash, so i went all-out (should've bought posi instead). oh well.
sounds like you have the right idea as far as what you want with your exhaust. my system would be great for a 600hp race car. for a 350hp road car, it's just... loud. it DID give me a great excuse to invest in an even louder alpine system, tho. :Brow:
i've always wanted to visit the netherlands. it looks very beautiful in pictures, what with the tulips and windmills. i love heineken and grolsch (and hash). but my '68 takes up what little extra money i have. but i wouldn't miss a buick event anywhere ever!

    by the way,
your car looks great! good work! would like to see more!
happy birthday! jan 8th, same as elvis's!

Yes, you got that right....Same as Elvis! I know!

Paint could be better though, it is it's original one, i will do a very
very good repaint next year i think.
Did you see my engine at street/strip 400/430/455 ?
It's still very smooth and quite, can't believe it! The odo says 50+ miles
but it's undocumented. The tires that came of in 2005 when i bought it
    were from 1978.

yeah, saw your motor. i'm on this site constantly, i see all. anyway, i think it looks pretty nice! to have 7 year old tires, someone's been babying it. you're right to keep it original. 50k miles sounds right. mine's at 135k and looked/ran pretty dirty so i took it all apart.
if/when you repaint, keep the original color. i like it!

  13. 1969briviera

    1969briviera Antique Gold Poly

Yeah, it is Antique Gold...i sure will paint that original color
but then in Base clear coat i think.
Inside it is Buckskin. All original too down to the carpet.
Just a few tears in the seams on front seat, but it is still so
tight that you can't see it very well

    Does your car steers tight?
How about yours inside, all original still?

  14. Howrad

    Howrad idiot... SAVANT!

    original? the inside? not exactly.
alpine stereo with speakers in the factory spots and kick panels.
    (expensive) wood steering wheel
    black carpet and mats
(uber-rare) buick logo sail panel lenses
    (rare AND expensive) replacement armrests
also, my antenna's in the winshield.

now i gotta paint my column black, fix the turn signal cam, install seat belts, and tighten up the passenger side window. oh, and re-install the stereo in a nicer housing (probably use an old cigar box).

and yeah, mine's parchment or buckskin or whatever they called tan that year. i was gonna go black, but a nice seat can run $500!:eek2:

OK, i like Buckskin color better then black,
i had black in my 68 and black exterior too, in the summer
it was just too hot. Buckskin is light, kind of Beige and little green
    depending on light.

I put good speakers in the orignal spaces where the old ones
were, and my radio/cd is under the bench seat, i do not want to
tear up the panels or dash.

What do you pay for a full tank of gas over there?
