im guessing the motor isnt original, it has A/C pullys on it and i dont think anyone would put A/C pullys on an original #'s motor if the car didnt have A/C. i would be cautious and ask for #'s and letters off the block.

I would give it a good solid maybe.. But with no documentation it will take some serioius detective work.

If your seriously insterested, go down there and check the VIN number on the engine against the car. There will be no substitute for this

I have seen dual groove Alternator pulleys on Non AC cars before, but these were 70 Stage 1 cars.

From the looks of it, no one has been fooling around with it for a long time, so the odds of it being legit are in your favor. If it was all fresh, with nice new stickers, I would tend to say no, it's a clone.

69-70 NON AC Stage 1 cars had dual pully like Jim says.
Car looks legit to me,easy to verify with RS stamped on block.
Someone needs to call this guy if they want to know

He states the number son the engine and trans match the VIN seems like as simple job to find the engine code stamp!

  6. car should have a 3.64 posi rear also.

    George,

When I owned the silver 69 stage 1 convertible that Chris has, we had to pull the engine out and clean the hell out of the area where the RS stamp is. It just wasnt really visible during a casual inspection.
It is possible this may be the case in this car as well

I emailed him this morning and GD was quoting what I was told. Here is what one of his emails said:

MY CAMERA WON'T TAKE A PICTURE OF STAMPINGS ON THE BLOCK. THE CODES ARE REALLY CLEAR AND READABLE.. 49H236247 BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND SPARK PLUG OPENINGS ON THE SURFACE OF THE BLOCK AND BETWEEN THE THIRD AND FIFTH SPARK PLUGS IS S8 72. CAR VIN IS 446679H236247.

I'M REALLY NOT A NUMBERS MATCHING NUMBER KINDA OF GUY. MY INTEREST IS IN STREET RODS. I HAD A NICE MODEL T HUKSTEER AND THE MAN WHO BOUGHT THIS FROM THE MUSEUM WANTED TO DO SOME TRADING. CAR APPEARS TO BE AN ORIGINAL CAR. NOTHING APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN CHANGED OR MODIFIED.

S8 is not right. I wonder if its RR or RS and it needs to be cleaned up better like Mark points out. Mine had a fair bit of corrosion and was hard to make out. I would defiantly want an inspection before bidding. Caveat emptor on this one.

The guy seems as if he's shunning the issue, he doesn't want to look any further and says he's not a "matching numbers guy". I am waiting on a response to a couple questions I asked as well...we'll see if he answers or not.

Heres his answer to the same question today

THE STAMPINGS BETWEEN THE FRONT AND SECONOND SPARKPLUG IS THE ENGINE VIN # 49H236247. I'M UNABLE TO GIVE YOU ANY OTHER NUMBERS. I CAN'T GET THEM BECAUSE OF MY HEALTH. I WOULD HAVE TO SEND IT TO A SHOP AND CAN'T AFFORD THAT.

He has this posted on the auction now.

HAD AN INTERESTING EMAIL. SENDER NOTED THAT OF ALL THE ENGINE PRODUCTIONS CODES OF ALL MOTORS IN 1969 SKYLARKS THE ONLY ONE WITH AN "S" IN IT IS THE STAGE 1 . YES IT IS AN "RS". BUT IT SEEMS STRANGE THAT MINE AT LEAST HAS AN "S", LIKE MAYBE A "R" MIGHT HAVE BEEN LEFT OFF? SENDER SAID IT MIGHT BE FOOD FOR THOUGHT.

Also, you need to understand that literature does not always match what you find. My original numbers 400 motor has the following stamping. "RRD" RR is a 400 GS motor and RD is a 430 Rivvy motor. Funny thing is, my heads have 430 ID numbers. All this on my 400 motor. They put 430 heads on my 400, so they probably stamped the block for both! Quality control at its finest. :error:

I'm not complaining, those heads flowed better anyway.

Since the VIN matches, it would be wise to go out and see if it has a stage 1 carb and distrib on that engine.. if it did, I would bet it is real.

If I were seriously interested in the car, I would make the trip.

Like was mentioned before, it's not uncommon not to be able to read the engine stamp until the engine is removed and taken apart.

STG 1 components and a matching vin would be enough proof for me, if I saw the car in person, and it didn't raise any red flags.

Could be a good buy, with no documentation. Documented cars always demand the premium prices.

Wonder what his reserve is? He's stating Barrett Jackson pricing but this car isn't in that league. Maybe because it's unmolested but it looks to have had body work>

Well, first of all, does anyone ever remember a 69 non-stage convertible 4 speed on BJ ever going for 125k??

I find that hard as hell to believe.

So worst case it is a non original engine 4spd GS convert, what is it worth then. Still would be a great platform for a real cool car original or not.:TU:

    Wow!

Must have been the Jack Daniels effect. I mean, it's nice to see them getting respect. Whether it's "real" respect or just drunken testosterone hot-girlfriend-with-me-at-the-time syndrome, I don't know.

That is a first though, is it not? I had the opportunity back in the very early 90's to by a numbers 69 Stage1 4 spd convertible for 8K. Needed a full resto because resto done to it was a nightmare. Beautiful blue paint over tons of bondo and gorilla hair. All stampings were accurate though.
