Hello, I am going to start on the trunk floor of my 1970 electra, after the sheet metal work is done I'm not sure what the factory color may have been. The outside of the car is silver and from what I can see of the remaining paint in the trunk area it appears to be a medium color gray. Any suggestions on what color I should paint it? Thanks again
Thanks for the update, I noticed on the inside fender well (drivers side), the color looks light grey or silver. I did not see the spatter effect in the trunk area, is it possible that it was just painted without the spatter effect?
My 66 Wildcat did not have the splatter paint. It has a poorly applied Flame Red finish over a gray primer. The trunk floor was applied well, but the inner fenders and quarter panel braces are just barley touched. It looks like what you have in your photo, except Flame Red. Maybe the big cars were finish painted? I don't know, mine was built in the Kansas City plant. I've seen other Wildcats restored with the splatter paint also, though. I can't imagine that it would be too much fun or cost effective to paint the trunk to match the car's finish, but mine was / is. When I get the body work done, I'll see how much it will cost to get the trunk done, but I'm sure the black/gray splatter paint, that I can do in my garage, is going to be $$$$ cheaper. But, when I look at your picture, it looks like what I have in my garage, except mine is red.
Thanks for the suggestions, I did see a 1969 electra this weekend and the truck appeared to be just painted with no spatter. I will try to match the present trunk color to a light gray and go with that.
Big cars do not have spatter paint on them. They have the trunk floor and package shelf sprayed body color. I see tons of big cars restored with spatter paint and it is wrong. Always body color. I can show you pictures later of all the big car's I've owned with body color trunks. The insides of the quarter panel have a black paint/undercoating type material on them. Preseumably for sound deadening.
Exactly - usually just overspray on floor because unlike the the lesser Buicks with the visible inner fenders and the drop in vinyl matts the Full size cars have the tar paper sound deading on floor , sprayon sound deading in fenders - felt matting covering the floor part of shelve (optional rubber matts too and depending on year spare tire covers) and cardboard side/rear panels. You see alot of lesser car detailing done to big cars because thats people see at shows and how reproduces vendors sell things (gold cad brake boosters, painted hinges, id paint marks, emission stickers, splatter paint etc) ---------- Post added at 06:17 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:13 PM ---------- PS the sound deading in fenders is under the paint and partly painted over and only goes up maybe 3/4 of the way, kinda done sloppy was covered with the trim panels.
Im no expert in this field at all, but my 70 Lesabre did have the splatter paint in the trunk. And it had definitely never been restored.
Spent the weekend welding in new patch panels for the trunck floor, I am leaning towards spraying the trunk floor with a black rocker guard and then hitting it with silver paint. The interior trunk floor and sides did not have the spatter paint, but was painted the same color as the car from the factory - Silver. Mind you there was a black carper on the trunk floor that I still have, so know one well see the trunk floor anyways. I also have the black card board liner that was installed all around the trunk. What do you guys think about the trunk floor and spraying it with black rocker guard and then the silver paint all around?
Just go with the Black Rocker Guard finish without the silver - most of it gets covered with the trunk mat and cardboard liners anyway. It looks very clean, covers well, dries fast and cures hard, protects the metal from water, and it will also act as a mild sound deadner too !! Just be sure and cover any exposed body surfaces to protect them from any Rocker Guard overspray. I used it to finish the entire trunk area, including the inner quarter panels and all the interior floor surface on my Riviera resto and was quite satisfied with the results and the finished appearance !! :TU:
