So...my car has been at Paintworks for a while now where Sean "The Magician" has been straightening the body out. The fenders have been split and re-contoured, gaps set, convertible seams behind the window welded and smoothed, etc. It will be sprayed in a few weeks. I'm trying to sort out the things to do for re-assembly. The car is a Fremont CA (GMAD plant) maybe April or May car (I'd have to check, that's from memory). When I took it apart, no sign of a flap or staples on the pinchweld under the bumper. There were several small hex screws on that lip that do nothing. I assume these held a flap on at one time. Who knows? Did a Fremont car have the flap, was it held with screws instead of staples, has anybody seen this or have a low mile original? Thanks for your help!
Ive only seen staples, and ive only seen the rubber strip on the earlier 70 cars thats my experience anyway
This is great info guys, thanks I appreciate it! That's what I thought, the hex screws means it had one and I guess I'll put one back. I think maybe T&N has them, or I'll look for something to use.
If Flint cars used the screws it could have saved me a lot of punctured finger tips from the staples.
I know Dave...the screws are light years easier to do. I just have to find flap stuff, I know T&N sold it before. I'll call them tomorrow.
Frank, I hope they still have it. Flint plant must have had industrial staplers GMAD plants may not have.
Frank, My 1970 GS 455 from Leeds has staples. In Dracut Ma if you want to come by for a look?. Just give me a heads up! Thanks, Ron
Thanks for the info guys! It looks like the Fremont cars definitely had screws, and it may be the only plant they were used. Ron, I'll probably run into you in the Spring. I guess the flap is 2" x 48" or so, are both of the long edges straight, or was the edge towards the front of the car a V shape? No luck contacting T&N, just a message machine.
Frank, The one on my car is original and it's 1.5 " wide and it runs about 2" under each quarter extension. The rubber contours the trunk lip with about .5" overhang with a slight v shape. I hope this helps! Thanks, Ron
