Hi Guys, Well I'm biting the bullet and repainting my 71 GS. Unfortunetly the car was involved in a fire this past summer and while the paint held up pretty good the car now has 50 dings in it from the drywall coming down on it. :eek2:

I'm stripping the car to bare betal since it had been repainted once before and has some orange peel. The factory color is 1971 Fire Red which I like. What I want to find out is do think I should I stick with original Laquer paint or go to a base coat clear combination. Do you guys have any particular paint or brands you would recommend? My paint guy just got done paint a 67 Chevelle using a Talborg Red which is pretty good match, but not perfect.

    Thanks,

    Jim

I am not a paint expert however I do know that you should not use lacquer as the formulas used now for lacquer are far inferior to what was once available and is even illegal to buy and use in most areas. The base coat clear coat urethanes are the best and are far stronger. The GM code for fire red is 75 and should be easily formulated by Dupont or PPG as they were original suppliers and this was a very common color so no need to look for a incorrect red.

    Jim,

I too had to strip mine down to the bare metal and I used a epoxy primer and am going to repaint Fire Red. Hold on to your socks though Fire Red base/clear coat is a VERY VERY expensive paint.

I would recommend R-M or Glasurit b/c which are both BASF products. The formula can be looked up under # 2278 or WA3975.
Sikkens and Spies Hecker are also really good.

Laquer? :spank: I use nothing but Dupont, Chroma base/Chroma clear. Paint supliers can match the formula, or tint to match if you have a sample. The base coat will run about $100 a quart in chroma base. (you will need a gal) Basemaker (Reducer) will be about $50 a gal. No getting around it. All reds are expensive. The proper shade of sealer will save you money on the base coat. The clear will run about $175 for enough to do the whole car (about $700 in just "paint"), Not including primers. Etch, surfacer, and sealer. That will be a few hundred more, so a grand just in the sprayable materials. Spies Hecker and sikkens are both good as well, so I'm told. More expensive I think.
