OK, I just found the two pictures I had of the Red 1971 GSX that I was offered to buy around 25 years ago. This was before Dempsy bought it. At the time I already had a Cortez Gold 71 GSX 350 car and did not want another, so I let her go. I have been looking for these pics for years and wanted to post them now before I "lost" them again for 20+ years. You can see from the pics that the car needed quarters, etc. but was in good shape. Before I hose the wrong color paint on the stripe on the 72, the pinstripe color was orange when it came in here. Was that the same with this car? I can't imagine they used red.
Adam, I never saw the 71 Red car in person,....................however I did go to California to see a guys GSX Collection and he had a 70, 71, and 72 GSX. If I remember correctly the 72 was either red or orange and I did take some pics of the stripes on that car. I remember getting pics of how the stripes went over the front hood chrome. That entire 3 piece collection was on the front cover of a car magazine years ago, with a nice write up about each car inside. I am not sure but I think his name might have been Brian Sheldon. Maybe someone could post some pics from the article. If you wait for me to find my pics....it might be another 20 years, sorry. Duane
Mike B, Yes that is the car that Karen owns now. Lets just say there were some changes made to it before Larry bought it, and leave it at that. I did not post these pics to do anything but add to the historical nature of this car. Duane
As did I and it is a beautiful Buick, and yes they were Orange, as to the shade I'm not sure I remember well enough to say with certainty, but Hugger Orange would be fine as the stripe is so small, and there certainly isn't any other original examples to compare too
Yes it is beautiful. Dempsy also had 2 NOS fenders put on when it was restored, and brought the originals down to sell at BG. At the time my old Cortex Gold 71 GSX had one fender with some rust in the bottom, so we bought 1 of the red fenders for the car, as it was built like 1 or 2 weeks earlier then my old car. Later Ritchie mounted the red fender on his car and brought it to the GSX Reunion with the red fender on. I remember laughing when I saw how the stripes matched up beautifully with the stripes on the rest of the car. Adam, Kleiner restored the 71 Red GSX. Maybe you could contact him and see what color he used for the stripes. Duane
It would make sense me that they would have just used an orange from the GM 71/2 model year color lineup. But yea a call to Kliener would be my direction as well
I had a little batch mixed up based on what was on this car already. From what I can see, and what you both have said, I think we are in good shape.
That 72 Orange was not hugger Orange not even close. 72 GM Orange has metal flake in it and Hugger did not. 72 Buick/GM Orange is code 65 Flame Orange.
Never said flame Orange, was the same as Hugger,...never said the stripe was Flame Orange either,...just said it would make sense that they would have used an orange from the GM lineup not necessarily the Buick lineup, hell they have used the Orange off the Opel who knows
I found this in the ‘72-‘73 Marin Senour paint book. There’s no listing of stripe colors for ‘72 but there is for ‘73; check out #29.
Has anyone ever determined 100 percent if that car was a factory painted GSX or was it done at the dealer? If it is dealer painted then stripe color is pretty irrelevant.
