Just thought I'd toss out this info. I have a binder of 1971 Buick Technical Serivice Bulletins, and found one that says... March 11, 1971 Due to low demand, sales code X3, Rim Blow Steering Wheel, is being discontinued. Orders submitted and preferenced specifying Rim Blow Steering wheel on Skylark, GS and Estate Wagon models will be changed to sales code X1, Deluxe Steering Wheel. Might explain why they're kind of rare. Enjoy. Ron
What's a rim blow steering wheel? Got pics of one? That's pretty interesting, I just don't have a clue what it looks like...
I really like that standard steering wheel! I have never seen one before. Does anyone have one on their car? Frank
The unusual factor is kinda cool-- kinda like my 68 Riv GS no air car (95% had air) with AM FM Stereo and power antenna, that cost more (266.00) than A/C--
Oh, cool...not that great looking really. I do like the standard one though! I've also never seen that, but then again, my Buick knowledge for that kinda thing is rather small. I think blowing the horn all the time cos you grab the wheel too hard would be kinda annoying anyhow.
I had a 73 T-bird with rim blow wheel way back in the 80's. The plastic which held the two electrical contact sections deteriorated so badly that I had to disconnect it. It would sound at any time of day or night. :af: :af:
They are rare on Buicks, I've only seen one, and it was all cracked up. I'd like one just for the rare factor.
Here's what the rim blower looked like in a 71 Riv. I prefer the standard (DeLuxe) steering wheel. I think the 71-74 full size cars should have been available with the Rallye steering wheel. In my opinion, it was the best-loking one and it looked great with the dash design. I removed one from a 79 SkyHawk S (the cheapest SkyHawk model) years ago and it happened to be the same color as my former LeSabre's interior (which isn't too nice however!)
I prefer that one :http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...d=1,1&item=8004254810&sspagename=STRK:MEWA:IT
Just for that reason. When I was a kid, my Father had an Olds Toronado with the rim blow wheel. He hated it so much he unplugged the horns.
I can see why the Deluxe was so popular, its the best looking. As far as interesting steering wheels I think the Chrysler "Square" steering wheel of the early 60's was pretty neat.
>>I had (and still do have) a sandalwood standard steering wheel in my 1971 Skylark. I removed it and put it on display in my garage after installing an original NOS sandalwood sport steering wheel.
