Looking for a decent rear bumper for a 71 Skylark/GS. Not concerned about the chrome, it just needs to be reasonably straight as I want to use it to make a new fiberglass mold.

    Thanks,
    Craig

CRAIG, Are you going to be selling the 71 rear fiberglass bumpers?

That’s the plan! I should be able to pick up a good core next weekend and in between drying time with the fiberglass hoods start making a plug to make a mold. I’ve seen some pictures of some rear bumpers and most of them the area where the tail light lens goes is just blanked out. I’m wondering if this is the way I should go and let people fabricate some way of mounting tail lights since it’ll be probably used in a race car anyway. Thoughts?

Just an idea, since you asked, Craig. . . cover both options:
If you mold the taillight blanks in your bumper, perhaps you could also supply 4 fibreglass OR aluminum "L" or maybe "U" style brackets to send with bumpers.
That way you are giving the options for buyer to either use a taillight decal or manually cut out the taillight area and glue in the "L" or "U" brackets to mount real housings and lenses.

    Again, just a thot.

Wheelz, I haven't looked at the back of a bumper in a while, but looking at your pic gives me pause to think. It looks like I could include the little drop down piece into the mold, that the factory L-bracket is attached to. The question would be would it be strong enough to hold the lens housing? If I made it too thick and you removed the bracket from a bumper, it may move the hole too far outboard to line up with the housing. However, if the bracket was just a piece of aluminum L-bracket, you could drill it and just run a screw from the lens housing into the L-bracket. Or maybe glass in a piece of aluminum U-channel with the open side towards the main bumper. I may be able to make a removable mold insert that would allow me to make the holes blanked off, or leave the insert out and add the little extension from the bumper for the bracket. I asked on the board a few months ago would people want it blanked or open for housings but I didn't even receive one reply :( I guess first I'll get the steel bumper next Saturday and prep it to pull a mold off of it and then I can sit in the shop and stare at it to come up with something. Does anyone know if the tailight housings for a 70 are different than a 71? I ask because I have 70 housings and spare lenses I could use for mock up.

yes, 70 housings are different than 71 or 72... the way they mount are relatively close, but the 70 lense has a tall "barrier" twixt the backup light and brake light area... I'll try to attach pix. . . .

BTW, I believe I have a set of 71 tail light housings I could send you for references IF you would like.

The housings are different, but, interchangeable back and forth (70-72).

If you put light mounting provisions in, I'll definitely be interested in getting one. It's just what my 71 auto-x project will need.

Most drag strips require at least one working tail light when racing after sunset.

Yeah that’s why I was curious because I’ve seen a couple guys running fiberglass bumpers and they have the tail lights on them. I was just wondering how they mounted the lights because most of the bumpers I’ve seen for sale site are for the 1970s style, it’s just a flat closed off recessed area that they would have to cut out and mount the light somehow

Thanks for the pic's. I'm looking at a bumper tomorrow that's only a few hours away, if that falls through I may have to call you! Do you know if the white plastic piece that bolts to the back of the bumper and holds the actual light bulbs is the same in 70-72's?

IE: light SOCKETS??? Inside sockets (closest to license plate) are back up lights -Single bulb contact... The other two are Stop/4 way/Running light sockets, -two contacts. and Yes, all twist in the same... Just gotta be sure to know the single contacts VS the double contacts. . .
