I see timing cover kits with or without a rope seal. Is there a seal that can be used in place of the rope seal? Any way to tell without taking it apart?
TA sells a neoprene seal for aftermarket covers. I believe the stock covers can only mount the seal from the inside. http://taperformance.com/proddetail.asp?prod=TA_1513A http://taperformance.com/proddetail.asp?prod=TA_1515 https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?t...crank-seal-with-removing-timing-cover.357312/

To replace the rope seal? I only see one steel seal listed and I am guessing it is for a cover designed for it not to replace the rope. Has anyone used an aftermarket cover not made by TA and had good results?
The aftermarket covers will use a front mounted neoprene seal. TA checks all the critical oil pump pocket clearances, and either rejects them or machines them to correct. I don't think there are that many aftermarket manufacturers of the small block cover. I think Dorman and Pioneer. https://www.autozone.com/external-engine/timing-cover/buick/gs-350
I replaced mine with a seal I believe I bought from Rockauto along with a speedy sleeve. No leaks. Like mentioned before check Larry’s post.
