So, what do these braces do anyway? Are they worth the effort in putting them on a car that originally came without them and would I need drill holes to install them?

All the bumper braces and core supports have the holes for these. They do tighten up the front and help some with distortion to protect the valuable grilles in or cars.

My 70 GS doesn't have them? I'm not saying it shouldn't or didn't but they weren't on there when I got the car. If it supposed to have them I better find some.

I remember my '71 convertible had them. My '72 has a metal grill, so maybe I'll be okay without.

How much left do you have to go on your '70, Bob?

All GS's, and I'm pretty sure, all convertibles, had them.
'70's would've been straight bars, while the '72's have the curve in the passenger side bar to clear the drier.

Actually both bars are curved on the 72 there is no left or right and 70 used straight bars. Different for clearance at the dryer for A/C cars.
