I have noticed something recently that I need some help to understand. I did a search and came up with nothing so if this has been talked about before please point me in the right direction Why does some 72s have the tri shield center hood emblem and some do not? Here's a link to an auction of the emblem in question: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-Buick-Hood-emblem-Ornament-72-GS-Skylark-73-Le-Sabre-/131419110952 The 72 GS I had years ago did not and the current 72 GS I have now does have it. It is related to the build date or build location or ?
I have never seen a GS hood with any emblem. However, every once in awhile some non standard "items" get attached at the factory. Of course, in my area, GS cars are as scarce as hens' eye teeth..
I does not seem that many GS hoods have them. I think it's like 50 skylarks to 1 GS. Wonder as you said just a mistake on the line and got added. I found two pictures in a quick search online.
All the 70 -72 I currently and have had in the past well over 50 never had any emblems. There added my owner .
I’ve got 2 gs hoods that came from 2 different cars that have them at the exact same position. Holes look factory. Was wondering why very few got the emblems Expecically on the gs hood?
I have never seen a factory 72 ram air hood with a emblem but that does not mean they NEVER did one or that maybe it was something that was done at another factory location. If it was in concourse I believe it would be incorrect and be a point deduction. The general consensus is that it is not correct. We all know you can never say never. One example is John Chamberlin had a GSX with drum brakes and that seemed impossible but it was correct for that 1 GSX. Unless you can prove your car was made with the emblem on the hood I would say its not correct. Thats my opinion and two cents worth of input.
Did the guy that passed away not too long ago have a one owner 72 Stage1 sun coupe with the emblem,... Now I will say I have seen with my very own eyes TWO NOS hoods,..both owned by the same individual that bought them from the dealer he worked at,...they both had the holes for the emblem
They just used the same sheet,...they wouldn't put a GS hood on a lark,..or vise versa,..put undoubtedly the top panel was popped for the emblem b4 it became a GS hood or a lark hood
I had a 71 GS that had the emblem. Holes appeared to be stamped. Car had been in few fender benders so it’s very likely the hood had been replaced. I was told recently by a Buick buddy that GM replacements (NOS) came with the emblems. I’ve never seen them in any literature like this. Don’t believe they left the assembly line this way but I could be wrong.
All (that I'm aware of) the NOS hoods had the holes for the '72 Skylark only emblem. It's certainly possible that a few came feom the factory that was too. We know of at least two '72 GS convertibles that originally came w/Skylark quarter panel emblems and GS fender emblems so anything is poss.
