Y'all aren't telling me why the film is good, you're just saying why you personally like it  Tell me the aspects of the film that make it good. Just because you grew up in a certain era and recall the film fondly, that doesn't make it a good bit of film-making I'll go you one better Frank- The Guess Who version AND Lenny Kravitz's both stink on ice. Never could stand the original, and when a guy like Kravitz copies something like that...uh, why can't he write his OWN cr@ppy song? he's got talent, write a lousy song of your own. Same with Rod Stewart. If Van Morrison hadn't recorded any songs, Stewart would have been panhandling 12 years ago
If you enjoy movies where you would likely connect with a main character try watching the Jim Carey movie; Cable Guy. Or if TV is more convenient then try watching Cheers. You may connect with Cliff. When I want to watch a great 70's car flick, VP is always awesome.
Larry, I hope you are saying those things with "tongue-in-cheek". uzzled: If not, I would suggest you edit your post(s), as they are coming off way too strong for a thread dealing with a movie and peoples opinion of said movie. Calling someone a "dork" is not the way to win friends or influence people.
Chris... in my profile it shows I,too, was born in 71. You came on with a post about a sorry remake of a good movie. Ive got no problem with a friendly debate, coz its cool. I wouldnt really pigeonhole the soundtrack on the original as being bubblegum, coz I had never heard of some of the songs, and I'm pretty good on music.Even the ones I had heard werent stuff that gets played to death on Oldies radio (at least not here). Barry Goldman seemed to do pretty good to me. I see alot of the bit part folks in other movies or shows, like the hitchhiker guy in the 55 nomad so it wasnt a junk cast. If ya hate it ,thats you..its a cult classic all over the world, there was a pretty good article in a musclecar mag recently, the memorabilia is in high demand. I am not gonna dig too deep into the antihero anti establishment stuff cuz I'm not thinkin about that watchin the movie. If its a good movie I will sit and watch if it blows,it doesnt matter what the deep plot structure means. Ok Chris, balls in yer court ..no bounce,no play..fish :TU:
Wow, some of you sure take it personally I never said the music was bubblegum, I said it was the dialogue . Ball's still in your court, you've mis-played it
Woops too busy watchin tv to pay attn...the dialogue was bubblegum? heck there hardly was any...beans lotsa beans..release the wipers..(sic)I remember that...Im just pickin bout the yall thing too...fish
 You haven't read half of what I've posted, Larry. If you want to discuss film, I will. All you're saying here is that you can't talk about movies as art, so you're trying to make fun of me instead. Now, I'm good natured, but enough is enough. Send me a private message about why I'm p!ssing you off so much
Some extra info.. I looked in yer profile and saw ya were into vintage aircraft. What era? Im a military brat and my dads a modeler. I go to a few shows a year and have some pics...lemme know if ya have any in particular you need(real aircraft, not models btw)..fish
First one was the best version as with EVERY movie remake ever IMHO. The star was the car and the star was good. In the first one, he made a bet that he he can drive from Denver to San Francisco in 15 hours which relied on his car being really fast, there was no other reason than that his car was fast. In the remake, he had to get there fast because of his wife putting no actual emphasis on the car as it could have been a yugo (and it probably would have been if they didn't care about the original movie), just his need to get to his wife which seemed to be a pretty sappy made-for-tv movie moment which is alright if you're into chick flicks but I prefer more action than a deeper connection to the characters. Would you want a deeper connection to the characters of gumball rally? Neither would I. This guy (from imdb.com's review of the remake) sums it all up:
Thanks mecha Esoteric was a word I was tryin to remember earlier, and it describes alot of the whole movie..just far out man. While we are on the subject of car movies..there are 2 that Ive never seen but get recommended to me alot. The 7 UPs and Dirty Mary,Crazy Larry..anybody know how to get ahold of em? thanks..fish
Okay, the movie VP may not be an academy award winner. To me, it reminds me of the time when you didnt need a second mortgage to have a really cool car, and it kind of builds on the feelings we all have of being a rebel. To just jump in , and floor it. I can also appreciate the flick "Easy rider", for the same reason. And to me , easy rider had the best sound track of any movie ever made , up to that point. Dont you think that nostalga has lot to do with all the things we like today.? Maybe even why some of us spend a lot of time and money to cruise around in 25-40 year old cars. :Smarty:
Hey Chris, Going completely off topic here, but are you the same 462cid who posts in the IL-2 forums at SimHQ?
While never intended to be academy award material or the kind of movie to spark in-depth conversations among the academic elite, the original VP succeeds very well in one aspect; it offers 99 minutes of escape. Just as Dirty Mary Crazy Larry and LeMans do, Vanishing Point is a fun movie for a car guy to watch. All the movies throw in a little background, or a lot in the case of LeMans, but the whole idea still boils down to watching cars driving fast with the drivers competing. I watched the VP remake on TV several years back, and while the quality of the filming, editing, and most of the acting far surpasses the original, the modifications to the plot to weakly justify the high-speed run make the remake feel like a cheap imitation of the original that belongs more on the Womens Network than the Speed channel.
AAAH. This man is a clear thinking individual. If you notice he did not over-analyze, take things out of context, or let his thinking and opinions run amuck. Thanks. :TU:
Guilty. How'd you know? You must fly the sim, too. I don't know if you're interested, but I'm playtesting a USMC campaign during Guadalcanal. I owe the guy who's making it; he did the technical advisory side of my Flying Tigers campaign and also helped with playtesting. Flight simming is what I muck around with during the winter, the stupid car takes up the summer
'30s and '40s mostly, both military and racing civil aircraft. Since I know I can never get into old planes, I got into old cars. It's better. In a plane, you can't pull over on a big fluffy cloud and fix the thing
