im waiting for my new wheels and tires to come in so i ran 195/60 14's from pep boys. which i swapped on just to pass inspection. it was my first time to the track. in my 67 gs im running a stock 76 455 with an 800 quadrajet, stock switch pitch trans, and 2 93 rear. leaving at 1000 rpm and "pedeling" the car i managed a 2.266 60 foot, and a 14.624 quarter at 94.77. while shifting at 4500. any suggestions on where to make improvements fora better et. i plan on sending out the dist to the ignitionman and getting some larger tires.
i think your right. i even think my posi took a dump on me. theres no rubber trown up on my drivers side wheel well. hey are you going to make it down to buick performance weekend at englishtown. id love to see your 67 run. although if im not mistaken it was sold on ebay?
Traction is the first order of business. Anything else you do to the car is a waste if you aren't making an efficient pass. If your posi is wasted, you may as well put some better gears in there. If it's a driver, mid 3's are good. If you don't drive it on the street much, something in the 3.73 range will work nicely. On the street you could run a taller tire, then swap over your traction tires for the track - have them about 26 or 27 inches tall. All in all, that doesn't seem to bad for a super low compression, stock smog-455. You're running around 95 mph. With some mid-3 gears, headers, 2.5" mandrel exhaust system and some tuning you should be up close to 100 mph and mid 13's (real similar to my 71 GS455). It looks like you're on track:TU:
Re: worn cone type posi Good points on the swaybar and the airbag... both things I did to my car around the time I went to a posi and 3.42's. The first thing I noticed once I put the swaybar on, was that it transferred the weight much more evenly from side-to-side. Before it was a twisting motion towards the passenger side rear. Once the swaybar went on, it felt like it went straight back. At the same time I had the rear rebuilt, I went to Hotchkis lower trailing arms (easier than bothering with original bushings and a non-boxed original arms). Remember, if your trailing arms aren't boxed, that you're going to have to "bush" the inside of the trailing arms to keep them from collapsing when you tighten the arm down.
An airbag is a good cheap traction aid. With only one in the passengers side at about 22.5 psi. I dropped my 60ft. from 1.75 to 1.70, and picked up about a tenth. Rick Henderson and I were at Pac. Raceway last night. He lost pressure in his air bag in the staging lanes. He ran a 12.25 which is good but his car is usually faster. Between rounds we filled his airbag back up and then he was back down to 12.11 - 12.07. The airbag helps!!! Wished I would of used it last year. ou: Good luck:TU: John
