By better, do you mean a different ratio, or some gears that don't whine? You should be able to find 3.08 and taller gears readily in a decent wrecking yard. 3.23's and deeper gears, you can spend some time looking for.
you've looked at the sticky threads over in the 'boats' forum, right? you can get an 8 1/2" ring gear rear end assembly (and therefore, any ratio you want) for that car.
