Yeah, I hear you. I didn't say I agreed with it, or was in on it. I'm not spending ANY of my money on either one of these cars. I talked to my buddy yesterday. He is looking for a home for the Grand Prix as is. He knows some guys in the local Pontiac club that are BIG Pontiac lovers, and believe me, this car is HUGE. Anyway, some of those guys may be interested. The route of parting the car out is a "plan B" so to speak. He is a GTO fanatic, and is not really interested in any other type of car. Remeber this car has not moved for 30 years. After evaluating the car, (engine rebuild, tranny rebuild, complete rewiring, new suspension, paint & body, some interior work, and more) he estimated he would have to put at least $20k in the car. Once completed, the car may be worth about $12k. The big cars aren't worth much. It would have to be a labor of love, and it's hard to find someone who loves these cars. Especially to the tune of about $20 grand. BUT, I agree with you guys. There is no way I would take the motor out of that car. I have NEVER seen a car like this at any car show, or the Power tour for that matter. There were a couple of cars that were similar to this one, but not a '66 with the tri-power. ...............kinda like someone taking a 425 dual quad out of an old Riv and putting it in another car. I'm taking my digital camera over there for some pics this weekend. I am going back over there to look at the Starsky and Hutch mobile with my cousin! ....Starsky and Hutch.......
Thanks for the update, Mark! I have no doubt he'll have no trouble finding a good home for it. I'm knee deep in Buicks, but have always thought the 421 Ponchos are among the "special" automobiles. I've only ever seen one in person, and the guy admitted it was a clone. That was 15 years ago! They must be rare, if guys have been cloning them for that long. Dan
The old guy that owns these cars is the original owner and special ordered both of them. He ordered these cars to be the "plain" model, but ordered a full gauge package ("don't trust them idiot lights")and the best motor that was offered. So the Pontiac is even more special in that it is one of the only Grand Prix's made that is a column shift, bench seat, 421 tri-power car. Yep, it needs a good home. Although, I would have no problem taking that 429 and C6 out of the Starsky and Hutch car. My cousin says he wants to make a grocery getter out of it....leave it the way it is.
Finding a bigger cubic inch engine for the GTO would not be that hard;finding a correct tri-power musclecar GP is rare.PLEASE don't part it out.
I'd keep the Montego as-is...drive it and enjoy it...heck it's an early-to-mid 70's piece of 2 door Detroit iron...with that motor who cares what it looks like. Only thing I could think of better (in terms of Fords of that style and vintage) would be the same drivetrain in a 72 Gran Torino or Torino GT. On the Poncho-that begs for a resto but I see your point on the economics of it all. Let us know what happens and get some pics. Patton
http://www.pontiacserver.com/gph1_9.html Pics The motor is 421 tri-power HO 375 hp 10.75:1 compression!
Great pic! Notice the aluminum panels toward the bottom of the cars body. This car has those aluminum panels. Pretty cool. They are perfect on this car, and he had a couple of extra ones he picked up somewhere. Wish it had the 8 lug wheels.
Man, Those cars are sweet! I'm glad to hear that parting it out is plan 'B'. Better yet, plan 'C'. :beer
I'll tell ya what.. Mark, if your buddy paid $1000 for the car, I'll triple what he paid and keep it myself and restore it. I luv big cars. Jim
Vast AND Fast You can tell him just to send it out here to my place. :Brow: It's become sorta a "retirement home" for large cars. I'd find the room for it somewhere. ou:
