I recently swapped my TH350 in favor of a 200-4R with a rebuilt GN torque converter from a local auto parts store. I have the lock-up wired to a switch on the dash, and as I was coming down from 45-50mph, I switched it off. However, when I was coming to a stop, the car started bucking like it wasn't coming out of lock-up nor downshifting. I shifted it in to neutral to avoid stalling, then back to drive again when stopped. I left again, it went through 1st, then immediately to lock-up in second. I turned the switch on, then off, and it came out of lock-up. That's happened a couple times so far.. any ideas?
Check to make sure your lock-up switch and associated wiring are not grounding out somewhere. I have seen this in a 700-R4, factory setup, where the solenoid wire was pinched between the pan and trans case.
I've driven it a lot since, and the problem hasn't reoccurred.. everything's working well, kinda strange.. wires aren't grounding or anything..
Direct wiring is never a good deal for an OD transmission. It will overwork the TCC, lug the engine at times, and the last thing anyone needs these days is to look for a switch when driving. The wiring should be routed thru a vacuum switch hooked to ported vacuum, and grounded on a 4th gear pressure switch. This will only allow TCC operation in 4th gear light throttle cruising. It will unlock when the trans comes out of 4th gear, and anytime you coast, or go to heavy/full throttle, just like the factory TCC's. TCI and several other companies make "kits" for correct TCC operation.....Cliff
Mark, no it only does it after it's good and warmed up; happened again a couple nights ago, but it came out of lockup very quickly after. I'm guessing the solenoid could use replacing too. Cliff you are very right and I DO need to get that done :TU: Thanks for the input, y'all!
A new TCC solenoid will cure the problem, it sounds like its sticking, very common when the trans gets up to operating temp. The lugging when comming to a stop, short shifting, all point to a faulty TCC solenoid in my experience.
