The most common ones around here are residing in full size Olds 88 and 98 models as well as Cutlasses, all with the 307 Olds. If you find a 307 car from the eighties, it is 95% likely to have the 200 od behind it. G bodies with V-8's are a good place to look also. 83-84 usually have a mix of 3 or 4 speeds, but late 84 on up, most are od units. Your salvage guy probably has 10 of them there, but does not know what he is looking at. Thanks, Rudy E

There is a place called "G-body parts" on the turbobuick.com page. He has TONS of GN's, T-types and the like and a lot of 200-4R trans's.

Here's his web site. I've bought stuff off of him for my conversion. Very nice guy to deal with.

Tell him you're looking for the overdrive trans out of a RWD Monte Carlo SS. That should clear the fog.

MW9 is the RPO number for a 200-4R. The RPO sticker is usually, but not always, stuck to the deck lid.

TexasT Texas, where are you from

    I was informed yesterday...

at the Mike Kurtz Trans Seminar, that the valve body on a 'regular' 200 4r is different then the valve body on the more performance oriented 200 4r that was installed in the Turbo Regal, Olds 442 and the MC SS. So you need to find a "good" one from one of these cars.

True that. No matter what 200 4R you buy from a junkyard, almost all will need to be rebuilt to hold up to the torque and stress of a 455 buick. Those that came in GN/TType's were the strongest of all, while the MCSS, 442, hurst, etc. were close behind. GN guys routinely run 12s and 11s with the stock transmissions and a good cooler, but eventually they will all fail.

Its easy to rebuild one though, and it doesnt take many modifications to add a lot of strength to the transmission. I rebuilt a low-po OG code transmission from an 84 olds delta 88 with a 307. I ended up with around 400 dollars in it after the buildup, including a shift kit, GN servo, bigger boost valves, modified govornor, red clutches/bands, hardened sun shell, and input shaft. I also dual fed the clutches for 3rd and 4th, which really helped out the shifts in those gears. It will bark 2nd and 3rd with no slip when you floor it, yet shifts smooth and quick at low throttle angles. If i was to put one behind a 455, i would buy a BRF or BQ valvebody from a Grand National source. These are getting to be pretty expensive(400 plus), again proving that starting with a good core is the most economical way to build these transmissions strong.

Most were of the low performance variety, with different valve bodies and governor assemblies aimed at low RPM smooth shifting. Mine is modified and will shift better than my stock BRF transmission in my Ttype, so its all about how you build them.

Sells all the parts you need, as well as a very large Rebuild Manual that is the best in the business pertaining to these particular transmissions. It is somewhere around 200 pages of nothing but 200 4R tech. Buy this book and read it, then build a transmission accordingly. They are $65.

This was one of the best modifications Ive ever done to my GS, I can cruise at any speed effortlessly.
