Can someone direct me to a thread about swapping in a overdrive 200r4 I think they call them, into my 65 Sport Wagon.I want to know where you get one and out of what year cars they came in and is it much of a job to do the swap. The 200r4 is a overdrive trans right?........Thanks

The trans is the same size as the turbo 350 about 1/4 inch smaller for the 200r4. The trans crossmember has to be moved back about 2-3 inches. You need a cable hookup for the carb. This must be hooked up for the trans to shift properly. This was a easy swap for my car but I do have a 71 skylark. I also use a lockup convertor that I can manually lock up in 3rd or 4th gear. I use 373 gears and in 4th gear locked up I run about 2200 rpm @ 65-70mph. Good luck I hope this info helps.

I found lots of post on the subject but have one question,I have a early 80s Buick Electra with a overdrive trans but its a 5.8 Diesel Engine in it,Would this possibly be a 200r4 or was the Deisel powered cars using a differant trans altogether and how can I tell.Trans is in car yet.........Thanks

Thanks Pete and good to hear from you.I am only going to do this if the one out of the Electra behind the diesel is a 200r4 as I cannot afford a differant one as I hear they are expensive,I have a 65 Sport Wagon with the original st300 and it is getting weak, although I have another spare st300 I figure if I am going to do a tranny swap anyway I would like to put in the 200r4 as it sounds like it may not be mush more than doing a original swap.If I find out if the Electra one will work I will sure ask you for some helpful advice, the st300 seems to me to be a real piece of crap trans anyway..Thanks

SOrry to jump in here Bruce,

    I just posted up a thread asking if a 200 4r from a '83Monte CArlo will work.
    Will it?

    Bruce,
i found one here for $100 and another gentleman has one for $150.
It seems reasonable. But i'm sure shipping will kill ya!
    HOpe you find one cheap.

Right now i have a th350 but i heard that a 200 4r will throw you back in the seat

    Sorry , The top one is a THM350 .
Do you have any Pick-n-Pull /U-Pullit/U-Wrenchit Yards near you ?
    Try this :
    http://www.picknpull.com
They won't have/give prices on their website or over the phone . I just got mine this past weekend , it was $60.00 + $20.00 core . V8 engines complete go for $150.00 - $175.00 .
Their prices are on a board as you go in . You pay $1.00 and sign a liability waiver and go have fun . Don't take any power tools along ,they won't let them in (take something to drink) . Usually I will go into the yard and "scout" my parts and then go get my tools .These are usually pretty good sized yards . All cars trucks are up in the air on stands . They have wheel barrows and Gantry Cranes on wheels with Chain hoists to pull engines .These trannies are in 81-90 Full size RWD GM vehicles (IF the gear shift indicator is intact it will have a Highlighted "D"). Most should be rebuilt to handle the torque of our Buicks .They were put in the gutless 305/307's that made roughly 175-185 HP and no torque to match ,but at $80.00 you can't beat the price (Core prices are $150.00-250.00) . We only have 2 yards in Missouri ,one in St. Louis and one in Kansas City, Mo.
    Happy Hunting !

I believe that 5.8 diesel was the Olds 350 diesel engine, so the trans will work. Just look at the tranny pan. They are very distinctive in shape with the little "bump out" at the end.

I did the swap on my '66 and put a thread up on it. Just do a search of my user name. It's a pretty straight forward swap.

I have read your thread Brian and it helped very much.I have a question for you though,With my ST300 as the original trans what torque converter and flexplate would I be using?Do you use everything from the original ST 300 or a combo of both or something..Thanks

Use the original flexplate, and the 200r4 converter.
