Had my car out yesterday, and changed the oil. While I was underneath, I noticed one of my mufflers has started to rust through at the edges. The other one isn't far behind. My current system is MT headers with 3 1/2" collector flanges into a Dr. Gas hybrid X pipe (3" in front 2 1/2"out back). The balance of the system is 2 1/2" with 17749 Walker long case mufflers. The tail pipes go into the N25 tips (Wheels 2 1/2").

With this current motor, I'm thinking I should step up to a 3" X pipe exhaust. My current system may be choking the motor some, and I'd like it to be a bit louder. I'm thinking I should stay with the Long Case Walkers. I know the GSCA sells a nice Power X 3" exhaust. Anyone installed that system? I'd like some recommendations. Does Torque Tech still sell exhaust? Anybody use another system? I'll have to figure out how to use my current N25 tips. They are currently welded on.

I have the TA 3" system with DynoMax mufflers. Was on Red car for years, now on convertible. I don't know who makes it for TA, but it has done well and held up. I reviewed muffler flow test and chose the Dynomax based on the flow through.

At the track testing, our 464 ran same ET's with system open or closed. This was back when the car was raced every other weekend.

All the X pipe systems require good bit of fab work due to the collectors of the MT's, need to goto a stainless muffler Magnaflow, the Walker Ultra Flow round case,Borla Xr1 oval case etc, sound nice I had the Magnaflow and Walker on my car like the Ultra Flows better, im ditchin the Xpipe this time around on my car not worth the hassle
To fight with when doin trans work , plus I like the sound of traditional dual head pipes anyway

My buddy just put a Torque Tech 3.5" X to 3" tailpipes on his 71 GS (470 cubes). He also has M/T headers, the system was installed by a local shop and it appears to fit great! From the back you can't tell it's 3", the tailpipes are tucked up high. Driving behind him I can see the large X but there's not much anyone can do with it since it's 3.5" and the M/T headers hang so low. He's very happy with the system.

I used Pypes 3" to the mufflers and then Hogans 2 1/2 tailpipes to N-25 tips. See no need to run 3" tailpipes since the mufflers will not flow more than 2 1/2 in tailpipes.
Your choice on 3' offset mufflers.

If you just let the mufflers rust out it will get louder.

Larry, I used a full stainless 3 inch kit from Pypes. I got it with an X pipe, and they're Violator mufflers. They are the loudest they make, and its quite loud, but sounds amazing. They have 2 mufflers that are quieter. It fit like a glove, all stainless, stock style hangers, all the clamps. The price cant be beat in my opinion. Just over $300.00 for the whole deal. I highly recommend it. I couldnt be happier.

I wanted to add that even though its quite loud, interior noise isnt bad at all. No drone, and you can easily talk while cruising.

    Larry,

I currently use the TA 3" system with a Universal X-Pipe from Jeggs and mostly LOVE it!
The reason I went with TA is because their system has a "Slash Cut" tail pipe vs. Torque Tech which uses a "Turn Down" pipe.
To me the "Slash Cut" tip looks way better!
As for quality, I have used both TA and Torque Tech and think they are very equal in quality.

As mentioned above a 3" system will give the same results as open headers or very very close to open headers. This has been stated many times.

I called Torque several years ago when I purchased my 3" system for my "Stock 350" with only Headers to pick their brain a little about "Back Pressure" and running to large a pipe and their answer was Back Pressure is only effected by the headers primary tube size or the first 2 to 3 feet of the exhaust system so if you are running Headers it does not matter if you go with 2.25" 2.5" 3" or 3.5" as far as having to little Back Pressure goes.Guess that makes sense if its based on Primary Tube size.

If you look at TA's info on Header tube size they say a 2" tube vs. a 1.75" tube the 2" can give you 10-20 more HP on a motor producing 500-600 Hp.

What size tube Headers did Jim use when he did the DYNO on your motor vs the tube size of the MT's?

As for mufflers, I run the Flowmaster Super 44's.
They are LOUD when you get on it and mellow while cruising which is AWESOME but I do experience serious interior "Drone" at about 2200rpm.

As mentioned above there was a DYNO test done comparing various mufflers which is what I would base my next muffler purchase on.

I think the Ultimate system would be the TA pipes in Stainless along with a Stainless X-Pipe and mufflers.

    Hope this helps,

All you need to do is trim the torque tech tailpipes, once installed, cut them parallel to the ground, then they look the same as TA.

I am running the TA 3" system and flowmaster 50's. It sounds great but cruising at 70 can make your ears bleed after a couple of hours. I also have the TA long tube headers and I get the ~2200 to 2500 rpm drone. I recently dropped my primary jet size from 79 to 74 and the interior cabin drone dropped from 90db to 83db measured with my iPhone app JL Audio. I might drop to 73 and up the rod to 50 and see if I can get below 80db. The system fits very well but make sure you route the passenger side pipe a bit to the outboard to avoid knocking the plastic axle vent tube with the rear axle suspension travel. I can't keep one of those little buggers in.

My plan is to use an H-pipe, 3" Pypes from headers to long-case walkers (17769 or 17792), then re-use 2-1/2" GSCA tail pipes out to the back.

I think your current system may be increasing your scavenging effect instead of acting as a restriction. It is big where it need to be big in the X before the pulses are traded and aligned, and smaller after that keeping the velocity of the cooling pulses up and scavenging those behind on the way out the tailpipe. They don't have a chance to become lazy and languish in your system. Our Mustang has a similar system that puts almost 750 HP to the rear wheels with headers, high flow cats, a 3" X that transitions to 2.5" pipes before the dual mode mufflers and 2.5" pipes to another X and exiting out the back.

Thanks Cheryl, and all who have responded. I had heard that going with the system I have would actually increase scavenging, I just wasn't sure if my current engine would want a full 3" system. The exhaust is in great shape except for the mufflers which are starting to go. They are the 17749 Walkers. I know they are among the best flowing mufflers out there. I have been told my car is uncommonly quiet for an 11 second car. The Walkers are very quiet at cruise and idle, but they do scream when you get on it. The 17749 mufflers are cheap enough. I guess I have a decision to make. Below is an old picture of my exhaust.

Torque Tech ALL THE WAY. Keith makes nice pipes up to 4" no kinks!

I've decided to run the Torque Tech X pipe system. Since my MT's are 3 1/2" collector outlet, I will get the X with 3 1/2" in front. I'll probably go with 3" tail pipes as well, but they will go to my stainless N25 tips. I am undecided about mufflers. Going to do a search and read up on prior threads. I know this has been talked about before. I have 2 recommendations so far. Jim Weise has recommended the Hooker Aero chamber mufflers.

And Rob Chilenski has recommended the Magnaflow.

I don't think you will be disappointed with the Torque Tech system. I ordered a 2 1/2" system with the Walker #17749 mufflers from them today.

Larry, i use those withmy TA2.5" setup and i love the sound. I bought mine about a month ago for $70 each! I can't remember the source but i can find it for you if you decide to go that route.
