Hi all. Perhaps someone can help me here..... Our 88 wagon (now like 115K miles or so) has an interesting situation. About 3 weeks ago I left it at the office for a night. The next day I went to take it home and noticed my gas gauge was dropping quick. When I filled it up I found I had only gotten about 7 to 8 MPG on that tank. OK, I figured someone stole gas and that was that. The next tank the entire tank was the same, about 7 MPG. The following day I took in in to be looked at because I did not have to time to search around myself.

Found, Carb sticking. SO, told him to rebuild it because I figured overall it would be better then replacing. After the repair it fired up RIGHT AWAY which it has not for some time.... He said he even found a piece of Teflon tape in the carb. Go figure that one out. That tank we got about 10 MPG. Better but with my driving open roads we normally get about 17 MPG. Any thoughts? He suggested the cat converter but if there is something I should check first then I would rather make sure instead of guessing around. I will say it is "running" better like the time I had gotten about 23 on the interstate all day......

To give you an idea, we are drving the Land Rover now to "save on gas". It gets 13.75.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

I have heard on the boards that the 307's were/are notorious for clogging cats.

Tune it up...plugs, wires, carp, rotor, oil change, etc.

    Kevin,
I have that motor in my 86 Regal. I replaced the catalytic converter years ago. The 307 is renowned for being a low performance motor (I call it the gutless cutlass motor  ), but it has always given me good gas mileage(17/24). After the cat replacement, I noticed it had more "tip in" perfomance on the highway. It responded better at highway speeds if I had to pass someone. (you are better off just leaning in to it then flooring it to pass ) I don't know why they put a 4 bbl carb on this motor:Do No: Anyway, I would replace the cat, the newer ones are less restrictive. On my engine, it was a 4 bolt flange in the front and 2 bolt flange at the rear. I did it myself with no problems. I would also tune it up like Adam suggested.
