How necessary is the crankshaft oil baffle on a stock 322? It has been present in the last 3 engines I have rebuilt but is missing in this latest project.
    Thanks in advance

    Crankshaft oil slinger?

The oil slinger is important for a couple of reasons. The oil slinger does just what it says it does, it slings oil onto the timing chain. Without it the timing chain won't get the proper lubrication. Secondly, I believe that it keeps the rush of oil off of the timing cover seal. Lastly, it keeps the bottom timing gear from walking off of the crank. it is necessary.

I'm talking about the sheet metal bolted to the crankcase below the crankshaft before the pan goes on; sometimes referred to as a windage tray. The buick parts book calls it a cranshaft oil baffle.

    oops

    Sorry about that.

I would say that the windage tray is not necessary but it does help.

My 56 parts car didn't have the windage tray the 55 parts car motor did. I don't think it is a super big deal. The early 55 motors have baffle under valley pan also ( I think because the oil fill tube is in valley pan) All my 322's are drilled for both baffles. I know the rodders use windage tray to reduce oil drag on the crank for more HP.
