It's been years since I've replaced a crankshaft seal on a Buick V8.Does the timing chain cover need to be removed,or just the balancer? Can I replace the crankshaft seal without removing the cover? I just bought my '68 last March. ......John :Do No:

To replace the front seal, the cover will need to be removed. you most likely already know to use the neoprene seal instead of the rope one (you do still have the option at the autoparts store). it also comes with the timing cover kit if you get the whole thing.

you may need to file off the small detents on the inside of the cover to install the new seal.

it is a good time to check and maybe replace the timing chain also. since it is only one more bolt. and about 20 bucks

Nate, Thanks for the info.I was pretty sure that the cover needed to come off,but wasn't certain. This car was not driven for 25 years.Probably the reason the original seal has worn out so quickly since starting to drive again last June.Engine has only 37,128 miles on it.I'll check the condition of the timing chain. Thanks again......John
