4-speed shifter needs rebuild?

The 4-speed in my 1970 GS (Muncie?) shifts fairly well going up thru the gears, but is a problem coming back down. 1st and 2nd are very hard to find most of the time. I assume it needs a rebuild. Does anyone make a rebuild kit for it?

    TrunkMonkey Totally bananas

You can buy rebuild kits for both the shifter (new gates and such) as well as rebuild parts for the transmission itself.

What exactly are you wanting to do?

If it is the transmission, you will need to disassemble and inspect everything to determine what you need (build a parts list) as well as level of tooling/equipment (press, etc.) to do the rebuild.

It is not complicated, but it is complex.

I want to take the vagueness out of the shifter. It’s difficult to find 1st or 2nd gear coming down from 3rd or 4rh gear.

After 50 years, most Hurst shifters will need to be gone through. I documented the typical things you find when you take one apart on my GS 400 thread.

Hurst master rebuild kit is $110, new selector pin carrier is about $16 and the clips and isolators for the handle are $50.

I get $100 in labor to rebuild them plus shipping back.

Is the OEM shifter a Hurst?

Doesn't it say Hurst in big letters on the chrome handle? Lol

Not sure you issue is in the shifter. Might very well be in the trans. But I bet the shifter is worn regardless

Yeah, it does say Hurst on the shifter  I've not been able to drive this car much, so I guess I wasn't paying attention.
